Carbon / Silicon is the band of former The Clash guitarist Mick Jones and former Generation X and Sigue Sigue Sputnik bassist Tony James .
history
Jones and James had already played together in the British proto-punk band London SS for a few months in 1975 . They founded Carbon / Silicon in 2003. The band has performed numerous times and has already released six albums, the first three of which were only available for download on their website. In October 2007 the fourth album "The Last Post" was released, which was released for the first time through the usual distribution channels. The self-produced album was mixed by Bill Price, who was also the sound engineer for The Clash's single London Calling . When performing live, the band is reinforced by bassist Jesse Wood and drummer Dominic Greensmith. In 2008 the band toured the United States, where they appeared at the Coachella Festival, the SXSW Festival, the Tonight Show and the Late Night with Conan O'Brien , among others .
There has been no sign of life from the band since 2013.
style
Carbon / Silicon used numerous samples for the first albums ; the result was described as "innovative" and technology-based. Jones explains, however, that the use of samples did not represent the musical ideas of the duo, but should only accelerate the creative process by achieving quick results.
Their first song, MPFree , deals with the subject of copyrights in connection with the internet and music and illustrates the philosophy of the band, which at the time was only distributing their music for free over the internet. The other texts by Carbon / Silicon also deal with modern topics.
