Alexander Shelley (born October 8, 1979 in London ) is a British conductor and cellist . Since September 2015, Alexander Shelley has held the position of musical director of the National Arts Center Orchestra in Ottawa, succeeding Pinchas Zukerman . In January 2015 he was also appointed Permanent Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London. From 2009 to 2017 he was chief conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra .

Life

Shelley was born into a musical family, his father is the conductor and pianist Howard Shelley , his mother the pianist Hilary Macnamara . He first studied cello at the Royal College of Music in London and then moved to the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf in 1998 . There he continued his instrument studies with Johannes Goritzki and also studied conducting with Thomas Gabrisch. He also attended master classes with Mstislaw Rostropowitsch , János Starker and Aldo Parisot as well as a composition master class with George Crumb .

In 2001 Shelley founded the Schumann Camerata chamber orchestra in Düsseldorf . Together with this ensemble, which he still directs today, he launched the 440Hz concert series in 2005, which is tailored to a young target audience . As artistic director, he is in charge of a similar project of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen called the future laboratory.

In November 2008, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra appointed him to succeed Bernhard Gueller as their new chief conductor. He conducted his inauguration concert on January 5, 2010. In 2011, he extended his original four-year contract early to 2017.

In the last few seasons he has directed the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, the Philharmonia Orchestra , the Rotterdam Philharmonic , the Netherlands Radiophilharmonie , the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in Venezuela and the Seattle and Houston Symphony Orchestra in the USA, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony , the MDR -Sinfonieorchester , the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the NDR radio Philharmonic Orchestra , the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra , the Swedish radio Symphony Orchestra , the National Arts Center Orchestra in Ottawa, the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra , the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra , the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra , the English Chamber Orchestra , the Orchester National de Bordeaux and the symphony orchestras of Monte Carlo, Melbourne, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. In February 2013 he successfully conducted four performances of Verdi's Requiem with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra in the Salzburg House for Mozart . In 2015 Alexander Shelley made his debut with the Czech Philharmonic , the Orchester de la Suisse Romande and the Camerata Salzburg .

After his operatic debut in 2008 at the Royal Danish Opera with Lehár's “ Merry Widow ”, Alexander Shelley returned there in spring 2011 for a new production of Gounod's “ Romeo and Juliet ”. He continued his opera conducting in 2012 for the Opera Lyra at the National Arts Center in Ottawa with “La Bohème”, in 2014 in Montpellier with Mozart's “Cosí fan tutte” and in 2015 with a new production of Mozart's “Figaro” at Opera North .

In January 2013 Alexander Shelley recorded Korngold's Violin Concerto with Daniel Hope and the Stockholm Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon . In 2014 he recorded a Britten Prokofiev Dukas CD with the Federal Youth Orchestra on the same label , which Shelley took on a tour of Germany. The highlight was appearances in the Berlin Philharmonie and in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, where he conducted the cooperation concert with the Berlin Philharmonic together with Simon Rattle .

Shelley has close ties with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen through regular concerts that take place in Bremen and throughout Germany. He also acts as Artistic Director of the “Future Laboratory” of the Chamber Philharmonic - an award-winning series that aims to develop a lasting relationship between the orchestra and a new generation of concert-goers.

Since September 2015, Alexander Shelley has held the position of Musical Director of the National Arts Center Orchestra as the successor to Pinchas Zukerman. In January 2015 he was also appointed Permanent Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London. When his contract expired in 2017, he ended his activity with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra.
