biography
Richard Blum is the descendant of Jewish immigrants and grew up in the Bronx, New York . Blum, who soon called himself Handsome Dick Manitoba , began his musical career with the band Catskills . In 1973 he worked as a roadie and cook for the Dictators, who soon took him over as a singer. On the debut album The Dictators go Girl Crazy! , whose cover features Manitoba wrestling insignia, Manitoba roared songs over TV, beer, cars and girls. Because of his willingness to antagonize, the dictators always considered Handsome Dick Manitoba their secret weapon. After the Dictators broke up for the second time in 1981, Manitoba played with the New York band Del-Lords . In 1989 he brought the album And You? With the band Manitoba's Wild Kingdom . out.
1999 Richard Manitoba opened the nightclub Manitoba's in New York City . Through Manitoba's close contacts in the music scene, he was able to organize numerous extraordinary live gigs. The club is also a point of contact for veterans of punk rock. The Dictators also performed there regularly after their reunification. Manitoba was also involved in their 2001 album DFFD .
Since February 2005, Manitoba has occasionally been lead singer for DKT / MC5, the successor group to MC5 . Manitoba also hosts the show The Handsome Dick Manitoba Radio Program in Little Steven Van Zandt's Underground Garage on Sirius-XM Satellite Radio .
In November 2007, Manitoba co- edited The Official Punk Rock Book of Lists with writer Amy Wallace , and wrote the accompanying texts for the CBGB Omfug Masters live CD series published by MVD Audio .
