Stephan Schröer

Stephan Schröer OSB (born March 1, 1940 in Freienohl as Paul Schröer ) is a German Benedictine monk . From 1976 to 2001 he was abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Königsmünster in Meschede .

Life

After graduating from high school and doing basic military service, Paul Schröer studied economics at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster and the University of Cologne from 1960 to 1964 . After graduating as a business graduate , he worked for Volksbank Meschede from 1964 to 1967.

In 1967 he joined the Congregation of Benedictines in the abbey a Königsmünster and took the religious name of Stephan on. From 1968 to 1972 he studied philosophy at the religious college of the Archabbey of Sankt Ottilien and Catholic theology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg . After his ordination in 1972, he completed a two-year study of social sciences with a state examination for teaching at grammar schools at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . From 1974 to 1976 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Würzburg.

On August 23, 1976 he was elected abbot by the Chapter of the Abbey of Königsmünster. He succeeded Harduin Bießle and was the second abbot in Königsmünster. His motto is: You are called to freedom. ( Gal 5:13). On August 23, 2001, the 25th anniversary of his election, he resigned . His successor was Father Dominicus Meier .

He became known to the general public through his friendship with Campino , the singer of the group " Die Toten Hosen ", with whom he appeared on various talk shows on television.

Schröer has been a member of the KDB Alania zu Münster in the RKDB since 1959 .
