Sparta is an American alternative rock / post hardcore band from El Paso , Texas .

history

Sparta was formed in 2001 in El Paso, Texas, from the previously disintegrated band At the Drive-In . Two of the other former members of At the Drive-In ( Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez ) founded The Mars Volta . According to band leader Ward, the press is always trying to drive a wedge between The Mars Volta and Sparta .

Jim Ward claimed the vocals. In addition to guitarist Paul Hinojos and drummer Tony Hajjar, who was born in Beirut in 1974 , Matt Miller (ex- Belknap ) joined them and took over bass. After EP and single releases, their debut album Wiretap Scars was released on August 13, 2002 , which was received by the critics rather subdued. With the second album Porcelain , Sparta recorded an album that also satisfied the critics and finally let them step out of the shadow of At the Drive-In.

In May 2005, Paul Hinojos, until then guitarist, left the band to join The Mars Volta. There he took over the part of the late Jeremy Ward (also the cousin of the Sparta singer Jim Ward). Accordingly, at the time, three out of five members of At the Drive-In were with The Mars Volta.

In January 2006 the band announced that guitarist Keeley Davis, formerly with Denali and Engine Down, has joined the group. Sparta's third studio album is called Threes and was released on October 24, 2006. It is Sparta's most successful release to date. a. Voted the best album of 2006 by the trade magazine Visions .

In June 2008 the band announced they would take an indefinite break. Singer Jim Ward wanted to concentrate fully on his solo project Sleepercar .

On August 3, 2011, Ward announced that Sparta was alive again. After a three-year break, the first concert after the reunion took place on November 17th, 2011 in El Paso. Ward also announced that the band would be working on a new album in the fall of 2011, the successor to Threes . On May 16, 2012, the first new song was released in 6 years, called Chemical Feel . A new album, Trust the River, followed in 2020 .
