Circles is a 2016 song by US rock band Pierce the Veil . It was released on April 26, 2016 via Fearless Records .

background

The song deals with the massacre at the Bataclan Theater during the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris . In an interview with Radio.com , singer Vic Fuentes announced further details on the development of the piece. He said that while writing the lyrics, he imagined what it would be like if he and his friends got into such a situation. The background for the writing of the song was the statement by the Bataclan band Eagles of Death Metal that some concert goers tried to protect their friends from the attacks of the terrorists.

In an interview it was said that Vic Fuentes was thinking of completely rewriting the chorus of the song. However, guitarist Tony Perry advised against it.

Music video

The music video with a playing time of 5:15 minutes was produced by Drew Russ - who already worked on the band's music videos King for a Day and Bulls in the Bronx - and was officially broadcast on MTV for the first time on July 25, 2016 .

The musicians move to a shabby hotel that is run by an old man portrayed by Matt Pinfield . When they arrive in their room, they notice the human remains of supposedly former hotel guests and go to the reception, where the owner of the hotel - who has observed the musicians in a hidden chamber - serves the four guests a drink after handing over their passports . The four friends lose consciousness from enjoying the brew; later they wake up in their room. In a hidden room they find various newspaper articles about the disappearance of other musicians, including Sleeping with Sirens and All Time Low . Together they try to leave the hotel and are prevented from doing so by various obstacles that the hotel owner activates by pressing switches. After locating the main security system, Mike Fuentes smashes it with a bone. They flee the hotel together. The next morning you can see the four musicians having breakfast and watching TV in another hotel. As the news broke, they realized that the hotel owner still had the four's passports and was apparently on his way to San Diego.

The music video is based on the 1991 horror film Nothing But Trouble .

success

In the first 24 hours after the song was published on Youtube, it was viewed more than 100,000 times. In the Hot Rock Songs Charts , determined by the US magazine Billboard , the song climbed to 40th place in the week of May 28, 2016. Later the song should climb to number 32. The song was nominated for a San Diego Music Award in the Song of the Year category.

reception

Leor Galil from Rolling Stone wrote that the song "chugging metalcore riffs with sweeping arena rock melodies and sweet-sounding pop-punk -Gesang connect with each other." Lisa Vanderwyk called Circles as the central piece of the album that both quick-witted sounds as also provides an optimistic refrain and a sugar-sweet bridge, which demonstrates the musicians' development of sensitivity to pop music structures.
