Selfish Machines (2010) Collide with the sky Misadventures (2016)

Collide with the Sky is the third album by the US post-hardcore band Pierce the Veil . It was released worldwide on July 17, 2012 via Fearless Records . It is the follow-up album to Selfish Machines and the band's first album on Fearless.

It reached number 40 on the Canadian album charts and 12th on the official US charts on Billboard . A week after the album was released, 12,000 records were sold. A count in May 2013 showed that sales of the album had increased almost tenfold. The group played on the Warped Tour to promote the album. Several concert tours followed through the USA , Europe , Australia , Southeast Asia and South America , where the group mainly played pieces from the album. In 2013 Pierce the Veil played for the first time at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park .

Three singles were released for the album: King for a Day , Bulls in the Bronx and Hell Above . To King for a Day and Bulls in the Bronx music videos were shot and the VEVO -Presence the band on YouTube released. Fearless Records also put the entire album online on their YouTube profile.

Production and publication

On August 23, 2011, Pierce the Veil announced that they had signed a record deal with Fearless Records . On December 22, 2011, the musicians announced that they want to move into the studio in 2012. Singer Vic Fuentes finished writing styles four days later (December 26th). The musicians began working on the songs during their winter tour with The Amity Affliction , Miss May I , Woe, Is Me and letlive .

The band flew to Elmwood Park , New Jersey in February 2012 , where they recorded the album together with producers Dan Korneff and Kato Khandwala in the House of Loud Studios (bands like Paramore , Breaking Benjamin and Underoath also recorded their albums there). The drum recordings took place in a separate studio room. The group was able to establish contact with the two producers thanks to label colleagues Mayday Parade , who have already worked with them several times in the past. According to Vic Fuentes, the pieces were worked out individually, which was not the case with the previous album Selfish Machines . The work lasted until April 2012. The album was released on July 17, 2013 worldwide.

The first single, King for a Day , was released on June 5, 2012. Sleeping-with-Sirens singer Kellin Quinn can be heard in the piece . On June 26, 2012, Bulls in the Bronx was followed by the second single. The third single, Hell Above , was released on December 21, 2012 - after the album was released. A music video was released for King for a Day and Bulls in the Bronx . The latter was posted online on May 7, 2013 on YouTube . The video for King for a Day was released on August 6, 2012. Both videos are not available in Germany .

Collide with the Sky was released as a jewelcase . The presentation shows a girl falling from the sky into a ruined house. According to Vic Fuentes, the theme of the cover should radiate hope when the ground falls apart due to chaos and problems in the social environment underfoot.

"The theme to the album artwork is' jumping off of the ground that is breaking beneath you." The idea is to inspire hope amongst the chaos that may be happening around you. If the ground was breaking beneath your feet, your first reaction may be to run and jump to safety, and it's that moment where you are suspended in the air that I am focusing on. A still frame where you're not sure if the person is falling or flying. It's about freeing yourself from the things that are breaking or falling apart in your life, and inspiring a sense of hope from the desperation. "

- Vic Fuentes on Tumblr for the cover artwork

music

The music on Collide with the Sky can be described as modern post-hardcore . When it comes to instrumentalization, the group is increasingly relying on guitar playing. Compared to its predecessor, Selfish Machines have also been increasingly used on keyboards to make the sound on Collide with the Sky more melodic. Singer Vic Fuentes alternates between screams and clear vocals in some pieces .

In an earlier interview with Alternative Press , Fuentes said the group might record a pop music album. The next interview with the magazine said that the band would always work with their musical roots. These are a mix of fast-paced punk and “technical thrash stuff”. There are hard and fast as well as slow, calm pieces to be heard on the album. The band don't see themselves as a metal band and have their own definition of hardness. In addition, the band is happy to have come under a label that does not urge the musicians to record things that the musicians feel uncomfortable with.

Texts

The lyrics are written by the band's musicians themselves. In most of the pieces, Vic Fuentes is primarily responsible for writing the lyrics. In an interview with the American music magazine Alternative Press , he said that he did not follow any concepts when writing his lyrics, but instead was inspired by current or family events, personal experiences in relationships, on tours and friends. He thinks that this is the best way to process all of these events.

"I try not to really go with any sort of concept or anything like that. Some bands are very political; some bands only write about love. Our band is always about what has recently happened, whatever is happening in our families, in our lives, our relationships, our tours and our friends. Whatever is weighing heavy in our minds is going to come out. "

The piece Bulls in the Bronx was written for Olivia Penpraze. Due to intense cyber bullying over a long period of time, she published a video on Tumblr and YouTube, among others, about her story and her plan to end her life. She hanged herself on April 3, 2012. She had been a fan of the band. The title Hold on Till May is also said to be a memory of Penpraze.

"Bulls in the Bronx" has a crazy story to it. It's a sad story, but it inspired the song. It's about this girl who is 16, and her friends wrote to me and said she recently committed suicide, along with a link to her Tumblr page. It was one of the most haunting things I've ever seen. It's so sad because she was such a sweet-looking girl too. There were things on there where she would say how she thought she was worthless, ugly, and all this crazy stuff. That whole thing really stuck with me for a while, and I wrote this song about her. "

- Vic Fuentes opposite mindequalsblown.net about the single Bulls in the Bronx

Commercial win

Collide with the Sky sold almost 27,000 copies within the first week of its release and reached number 12 in the official US charts (determined by Billboard magazine ). In Canada , the album debuted at number 40. With the British Kerrang! Awards the group was nominated four times. King for a Day was nominated for Best Single and Best Video . The group won in the Best Video category . In the Alternative Press reader voting , Collide with the Sky took first place. The readers of the British Dead Press voted Collide with the Sky album of the year 2012. By May 2013, the record had sold around 120,000 times worldwide. The album was "leaked" on June 16, 2012, which means it was made available on the Internet weeks before it was actually released. However, the illegal release had little effect on the later release of the album. Due to the new edition of the CD, which was released together with the tour DVD This Is a Wasteland , the album was sold another 15,000 times in the USA, so that the sold edition of the album rose to 180,000 records. In addition, the album was able to enter the charts again at the end of 2013, at number 62. In August 2014, it was said that the album had sold almost a quarter of a million. On June 18, 2015 later it was said that the album had now been sold almost 300,000 times over the counter. On March 18, 2016, Collide with the Sky hiked almost 350,000 times over the counter. On October 6, 2016, the album was awarded a gold record in the United States for 500,000 records sold. In the UK , the album was not able to place in the official album charts, but in August 2012 it rose to number 21 in the best rock & metal album charts and number 40 in the independent album charts .

On November 8, 2014, the album's first single, King for a Day , was awarded a gold record by the RIAA for more than 500,000 units sold in the United States. The song has been added to the list of playable songs in Guitar Hero Live .

Reviews

English speaking

Victoria Patneaude from Alter the Press! described the album as mostly positive. The only negative criticism she was of the opinion that Collide with the Sky hardly gave the listener time to breathe. She says that Pierce the Veil is one of the few bands that manages not to scare their fans away from the start of an album. Patneaude awarded 4 out of 5 possible points. The users of the music platform Ultimate-Guitar were mostly enthusiastic about the album. Here, too, the record received four out of five stars.

In Under the Gun states, inter alia, that it was hard not to like the songs of the group. The critic cited the profundity of most of the pieces as the reason. As an example, the song A Match Into Water was given, which was written for a female fan of the band who developed breast cancer and describes her fight with cancer. The critic gave 9 points.

Rob Sayce from British Rock Sound Magazine described the group's third album as a "puristic nightmare" with the Pierce the Veil but able to play in the top league in the European music market. He awarded the record 7 points. Big Cheese's Sarah Angell thinks Pierce the Veil could become a post-hardcore heavyweight with Collide with the Sky . However, the album has several weaknesses. Angell awarded three out of five stars.

German speaking

Kai wrote on the music platform Burn Your Ears that he approached Collide with the Sky with mixed feelings , which he justifies with the musical differences (especially the vocals) to the two previous albums A Flair for the Dramatic and Selfish Machines . He describes the group as an "over-the-top version of ' falling in reverse '" and believes that the group is more convincing than before with its harder parts. He compares the band with Alesana , and the critic also classifies the group as Screamo . Sebastian Berning from Powermetal.de awarded 8 out of 10 possible points. He described that the group has changed little in terms of the sound compared to its two predecessors, but the change from fast to slow and soft to hard (and vice versa) seems much more "homogeneous". Only the final track Hold on Till May he finds boring and uninspired, while A Match Into Water was convincing from the start.

Florian Krapp from the German Metal Hammer described the songs on Collide with the Sky as full of energy, but the choruses remain unintentionally. The singer's voice also takes getting used to. Krapp describes the “playful prog-rock passages”, the sometimes audible Spanish guitars and the great sound of the album as highlights . The critic, on the other hand, feels that the lyrics are too soft. Metal Hammer awarded 4 out of 7 points.

Stephan Busam describes that Collide with the Sky is an expressive and well played album that fans of The Used in particular should like. He awarded 7 out of 10 points.

controversy

The cover of the album sparked a minor controversy because, according to the portal AbsolutePunk, it was more similar to the 2011 released Design Escape by graphic designer Daniel Danger. The group stated in a statement that it had contacted Danger to obtain permission to use the work. However, he didn't get in touch, so the musicians hired another designer to make a similar picture.
