Tijuana is a municipality in the Mexican state of Baja California with 1,559,683 inhabitants (2010). The municipality covers an area of approx. 1236 km². The administrative seat and by far the largest city of the municipality is Tijuana . The municipality's motto is Aquí empieza la patria (“Home begins here”).

The municipality of Tijuana is located in the far northwest of the state of Baja California and thus the whole country. The municipality of Tijuana also includes some islands such as Islas Coronado . Up to 1200 m located height, it is one entirely to the physiographic province of the peninsula Baja California and for hydrographic region Baja California Noroeste . Geologically, the municipality is made up of around 45% extrusive rock , of which around 39% is andesitic tuff , 16% sedimentary rock , 8% intrusive rock , 6% alluvion and almost 2% metamorphic rock . The predominant soil types are the Leptosol (58%) and the Vertisol (11%). A good half of the municipality is covered by undergrowth, more than 20% are built on, around 9% are used for arable farming.
It borders the Municipio Tecate in the east, the Municipio Ensenada in the south, Playas de Rosarito in the southwest , the Pacific Ocean in the northwest and the US state of California in the north .

According to the 2010 census, the municipality has 1,559,683 inhabitants in around 420,000 residential units. Of these, 12,124 persons were identified as speakers of indigenous languages recorded, including 3,781 speakers of Mixtec and 1,217 speakers of Nahuatl . About 2% of the population were illiterate. 696,907 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 63% were men or 5.3% were unemployed. 3.5% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
