The Pretty Reckless is an American alternative rock - band from New York City . It was founded in 2009 by actress and model Taylor Momsen as The Reckless . Musically, the band relies heavily on the influences of blues rock and classic hard rock .

history

Early years (until 2010)

Taylor Momsen

Taylor Momsen has worked with various producers since 2007 , most of whom were more active in the pop music field . Two years later she met rock producer Kato Khandwala, who introduced Momsen to guitarist Ben Philips. The first songs were written in a threesome. The Pretty Reckless played their first concert on May 5, 2009 in New York City with three musicians unknown by name. After seven concerts, the band presented three new musicians, John Secolo (guitar), Matt Chiarelli ( bass ) and Nick Carbone ( drums ), with whom the band appeared as the opening act for The Veronicas on their North American tour. After a few months, Secolo, Chiarelli and Carbone left the band again.

The successors were Ben Philips, Mark Damon (bass), Jamie Perkins (drums), who had been active in the rock band Famous for years . They signed a contract with Interscope Records and posted two demo recordings on their MySpace page in August 2010 . On December 30, 2009, the band released the song "Make Me Wanna Die". Initially available as a free download from the Interscope website for a limited time , it subsequently appeared on the soundtrack for Kick-Ass and was released as a single in the UK on May 16, 2010 . The title reached number 16 in the UK single charts .

Light Me Up (2010 to 2012)

Ben Philips

The Pretty Reckless played the Warped Tour and released their first self-titled EP on June 22, 2010 . The debut album Light Me Up was released in August 2010 in the United Kingdom and Germany , in the USA only in February 2011. It reached number six in the British and number 65 in the US album charts . Light Me Up sold around 250,000 times in the United States . The band played over 100 concerts until March 2012, including supporting Evanescence and Guns N 'Roses . They also performed at festivals such as Rock am Ring / Rock im Park , the Download Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival .

In March 2012 the band released their second EP Hit Me Like a Man , which contains three new songs and two live recordings of songs from the album Light Me Up . Another tour of North America followed, during which the band appeared alongside headlining shows as supporting act for Marilyn Manson . Further concerts in South America and Asia followed. The previously unreleased song "Only You" was released on the soundtrack of the film Frankenweenie . The fourth single from the debut album Kill Me was used at the end of the final episode of the TV series Gossip Girl , in which Taylor Momsen was one of the main cast.

Going to Hell (since 2012)

Mark Damon

In the fall of 2012, The Pretty Reckless began recording their second studio album in New Jersey . In the meantime, they separated from Interscope Records and switched to the record label Razor & Tie. The recording had to be interrupted after the studio was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy . The band lost some of their instruments and had to repeat many recordings after the studio was renovated. After completing the album, the band went on a headlining tour of North America.

The album Going to Hell was finally released on March 12, 2014 and reached number five on the US album charts with around 35,000 copies sold in the first week after its release. In the UK it reached number eight and in Germany number 35. At the Golden God Awards of the US magazine Revolver, singer Taylor Momsen appeared together with Joan Jett and ZZ top guitarist Billy Gibbons .

The Pretty Reckless played a European tour supporting Fall Out Boy in March 2015 , before a North American tour supporting Halestorm . In the summer of 2014 they played at the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals . It has been known since the end of 2015 that the band is writing new songs.

style

Andrew Leahey of Allmusic described the music of The Pretty Reckless as a mixture of hard rock and post-grunge and compared the band to Hole or The Runaways . Frank Thiessies from the German magazine Metal Hammer named the music on Going to Hell as a mixture of 90s-influenced alternative and classic rock and compared The Pretty Reckless with the Smashing Pumpkins , Stone Temple Pilots or The White Stripes . Taylor Momsen's singing voice has been compared to Lita Ford , Pink , Bif Naked or Lzzy Hale .
