Reel Big Fish is an American ska punk band from Orange County ( California ). Since their formation in 1991 and the demo In the Good Old Days… , only Aaron Barrett can be seen as the original member of the band. Dan Regan joined the band in 1994 and Scott Klopfenstein first appeared on the second album Turn The Radio Off .

history

Reel Big Fish were founded by Aaron Barrett, Matt Wong and Andrew Gonzales, and in their early days emerged as a typical cover band for rock and pop classics. Their debut album Everything Sucks , which became a hit in the underground scene, brought the band a contract with the Mojo Records label. The album Turn the Radio Off , which was released on the US market at the end of 1996, finally established Reel Big Fish in the ska punk scene and the band began touring the USA. The first mainstream successes were achieved with the single Sell ​​Out , which became a great radio hit in the USA and was used for the soundtrack to the PlayStation game FIFA 2000 . After the release of Keep Your Receipt EP (1997) and Why Do They Rock So Hard? (1998) Andrew Gonzales, Grant Barry and Travis Werts announced their exit.

In 1996, Reel Big Fish starred in The Sports Cannons , a film by South Park inventors Trey Parker and Matt Stone . A cover version of the a-ha hit Take on Me was released as a single for the film .

In 2002 a greatest hits album called Favorite Noise came onto the European market. In the same year the next regular album Cheer Up! where the single Where Have You Been entered the American charts .

On June 20, 2003 Carlos de la Graza announced his resignation after a concert in Anaheim , which was later released on DVD ( The Show Must Go Off - Live at the House of Blues ), in order to devote himself to other areas of his career . In 2004, Barrett fired Tyler Jones for excessive drinking and replaced him with John Christianson. Tavis Werts and Grant Barry joined them as replacements for a short time.

In 2005 the fifth album We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy was released , with Justin Ferreira as the drummer. However, he was fired before the official release and replaced by Ryland Steen.

In 2006, Reel Big Fish were discontinued by the Jive Records label, whereupon they founded their own label Rock Ridge Music and the live album Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album was released , which also included the DVD You're All In This Together contains. Also in the same year the album Greatest Hit… And More was released by the former label of the band Mojo Records, which Reel Big Fish did not like to see. Therefore they urged the fans on their Myspace blog not to buy the album. It would be better to invest in the band itself than in their ex-label.

In the following year, Reel Big Fish and Zolof The Rock & Roll Destroyer produced the split EP Duet All Night Long , which features covered songs. On June 26, 2007, Matt Wong announced that he would be leaving the band. According to the band, this was due to his recently born child and wife. He would rather concentrate on his role as a family man and spend more time with his child and wife. Derek Gibbs, a friend of the band, has taken on the role of bass player. He has played bass guitar with Jeffries Fan Club and also with The Forces of Evil , a side project of Aaron Barret.

On July 10, 2007, the first studio album was released after the label change Monkeys for Nothin 'and the Chimps for Free (the name is a reference to the single Money for Nothing by the Dire Straits ), the new as well as older, never before released songs includes. The production of the album can also be seen on a DVD.

The new cover album Fame, Fortune and Fornication was released on January 20, 2009 and contains new versions of well-known hits by u. a. Tom Petty , Poison and Slade . On July 20, 2010, they released another album, A Best of Us for the Rest of Us , which includes 22 newly recorded songs and 14 “Skacoustic” versions.

On January 11, 2011, Scott Klopfenstein announced that he was leaving the band.
