South Acton is a train station in the London Borough of Ealing . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 3 on the North London Line and is served by London Overground trains. For several decades, South Acton was also the terminus of a branch line of the District Line belonging to London Underground .

history

The station was opened on January 1, 1880 by the North & South Western Junction Railway , a joint venture of the London and North Western Railway , the Midland Railway and the North London Railway . Operation on the approximately 1,100 meter long link to Acton Town began on May 15, 1899, but initially only for freight traffic. After the electrification of the line, the Metropolitan District Railway , the predecessor of the District Line, started passenger traffic. Despite the dual track of the line, it used only one platform in South Acton. The trains initially ran via Acton Town to Hounslow Barracks . In Acton Town there was a connection to and from the city center.

After the route to Hounslow had been taken over by the Piccadilly Line on February 15, 1932 , only a shuttle train remained between Acton Town and South Acton. The employees referred to this as The Tea Run , because the short travel time in Acton Town meant that you could put on a tea kettle and boil the water on time for your return. From June 15, 1958, the shuttle train stopped running on Sundays and on February 28, 1959, operations were finally stopped due to insufficient passenger numbers.

The District Line station no longer exists today; only a few bridge abutments and part of the railway embankment remain from the link to Acton Town . The main railway station is still in operation today.
