Hounslow West is an above-ground London Underground station in the London Borough of Hounslow . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 5 on Bath Road. In 2013, 3.34 million passengers used this station served by the Piccadilly Line .

history

The opening of the Hounslow Barracks station took place on July 21, 1884, when the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR; predecessor of the District Line ) opened a branch line from Acton Town to this point. It was initially built on a single track west of Osterley because the low population density at the time did not justify further expansion. The only significant traffic generated the nearby barracks (engl. Barracks ). The electrification of the line was completed on June 13, 1905 and on December 1, 1925 the station was given its current name.

In April 1929, the expansion to double lane was completed and the side platform was replaced by an island platform. The original station building was demolished and under the direction of the architect Charles Holden a representative new building, clad with granite and limestone , was built, which was inaugurated on July 5, 1931. On March 13, 1933, trains on the Piccadilly Line also stopped for the first time. Since October 9, 1964, it is the only line on the section west of Acton Town, as the District Line was shortened.

From the early 1960s, the number of passengers increased more and more, as Hounslow West was the closest to London Heathrow Airport , which is about five kilometers further west. In October 1971, the complete renovation of the facilities began, which entailed moving the platforms below the surface. From July 19, 1975, trains continued to Hatton Cross . The station building from the 1930s was preserved and has been a listed building ( Grade II ) since 1994 .
