history

Incoming train on the Piccadilly Line

The station was opened on July 1, 1879 by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR; predecessor of the District Line), which put the route between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway into operation on that day . On May 1, 1883, the route followed in the direction of Hounslow Town . At the beginning the station was called Mill Hill Park . On June 23, 1903, the MDR electrified the route north of Acton Town to Park Royal & Twyford Abbey . The line to Hounslow Town followed on June 13, 1905, the one to central London on July 1, 1905. Also on June 13, 1905, the MDR began operations on the short branch line to South Acton station . After a renovation, the station was given its current name on March 1, 1910.

The Piccadilly Line ran from July 4, 1932 to South Harrow (later to Uxbridge), from January 9, 1933 together with the District Line to Northfields (from March 13, 1933 to what was then the terminus at Hounslow West ). The single-track branch line to South Acton, which was last a short shuttle connection, was closed due to low traffic on February 28, 1959 and dismantled a little later, as was the side platform in Acton Town. On December 10, 1964, the District Line ended operations on the branch line to Hounslow West and has only operated to Ealing Broadway since then .

investment

In preparation for the handover of the Uxbridge branch of the District Line to the Piccadilly Line, the station was completely rebuilt in 1932. The architect Charles Holden designed a modern station building that combines functionalism and Art Deco . It consists of red bricks and reinforced concrete and has large clerestory . The building has been a Grade II listed building since 1994 , including the shop wing on Gunnersbury Lane.

The London Transport Museum stores its reserve exhibits in a rail-linked museum depot across the street. It is open to the public on numerous weekends.
