Ealing Common is an above-ground London Underground station in the London Borough of Hounslow . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 3 on Usbridge Road. Trains on the District Line and Piccadilly Line operate here . In 2014, 3.57 million passengers used the station. Halfway to the neighboring Acton Town station is one of the District Line's main workshops, including a parking facility that is accessible from both sides.

history

The station was opened on July 1, 1879 by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR; predecessor of the District Line), as part of the route between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway . From 1886 to March 1, 1910, the station name was meanwhile Ealing Common & West Acton .

On June 28, 1903, the MDR opened an extension north to Park Royal & Twyford Abbey station , which was extended to South Harrow five days later . This new line was - together with the existing tracks between Ealing Common and Acton Town - the first electrified underground railway. On July 4, 1932, the Piccadilly Line was extended beyond its previous endpoint Hammersmith and took over the route between Ealing Common and South Harrow from the District Line. Since then, the District trains have only run to Ealing Broadway .

In 1930/31 a new station building was built, which replaced the old one from 1879. The building designed by Charles Holden corresponds in style to the Morden extension of the City and South London Railway (now part of the Northern Line ). It is made of Portland stone and has a high heptagonal counter hall with windows on all sides. The new building opened on March 1, 1931. It has been a listed building ( Grade II ) since 1994 , including the shops in the vestibule and the platforms.
