South Harrow is an above-ground London Underground station in the London Borough of Harrow . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 5 on Northolt Road. In 2013, 2.29 million passengers used this station served by the Piccadilly Line .

history

The station was opened on June 28, 1903 by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR; predecessor of today's District Line ). South Harrow was the terminus of the new line that opened that day and ran north from Park Royal & Twyford Abbey . The section between Ealing Common and Park Royal & Twyford Abbey had opened five days earlier. The new line was - together with the existing tracks from Acton Town  - the first electrified of the underground railways .

North of South Harrow, the route leads through the Roxeth Marshes to Rayners Lane . The construction of the viaduct over this now drained alluvial land was considered a technical masterpiece at the time. Nevertheless, the approximately 1.8 km long section remained unused for years because no agreement could be reached with the Metropolitan Railway on the management of trains in the direction of Uxbridge . It was not until March 1, 1910, that District trains went beyond South Harrow after the missing section had been electrified.

On July 4, 1932, operations on the route between Ealing Common and South Harrow were transferred to the Piccadilly Line, until October 22, 1933, there was an isolated shuttle service on the District Line to Uxbridge, before this section was also transferred to the Piccadilly Line.

The original station building was about 170 m south of the current one and was accessible from South Hill Avenue. Today it stands in the middle of a parking lot next to the eastern platform. The new Charles Holden- designed building on Northolt Road was inaugurated on July 5, 1935. It combines functionalism and Art Deco and is made of red bricks.
