Inside the station

Uxbridge is an overground station of the London Underground in the London Borough of Hillingdon . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 6, on the High Street in the center of Uxbridge. The station was used by 7.59 million passengers in 2013. It is one of four western terminus of the Metropolitan Line and the northwest terminus of the Piccadilly Line .

On July 4, 1904, the Metropolitan Railway (predecessor of the Metropolitan Line) opened the route between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge. The trains initially ran with steam locomotives , but electrical operation began just six months later. From March 1, 1910, trains of the Metropolitan District Railway (today's District Line ) drove to Uxbridge; those of the Piccadilly Line replaced them on October 23, 1933.

The first station was around 250 meters northeast of the current location on Belmont Road. For this reason, London Underground officials decided to move it to a more convenient location in the center of Uxbridge. The new station building on High Street, designed by Charles Holden , opened on December 4, 1938, in the Art Deco style . The front of the red brick building is flanked by two statues by the artist Joseph Armitage depicting stylized impellers. A high concrete roof with a cloister spans the tracks, the glass paintings are by Ervin Bossányi . The new station building has been a listed building ( Grade II ) since 1983 . The old station building on Belmont Road served as a grocery store for several decades and was finally demolished in 1985. Today there is the parking lot of a supermarket there.
