Sudbury Hill Underground Station
Sudbury Hill is an above-ground London Underground station in the London Borough of Harrow . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 4 on Greenford Road. In 2013, 2.01 million passengers used this station served by the Piccadilly Line . About 150 meters to the north is the Sudbury Hill Harrow station of the Chiltern Railways .
The Metropolitan District Railway (MDR; predecessor of today's District Line ) opened a new line from Park Royal & Twyford Abbey to South Harrow on June 28, 1903 . The section between Ealing Common and Park Royal & Twyford Abbey had opened five days earlier. The new line was - together with the existing tracks from Acton Town - the first electrified underground railway. On July 4, 1932, operations on the route between Ealing Common and Rayners Lane were transferred to the Piccadilly Line .
The original station building was made of wood. It was demolished in 1930/31 in preparation for the transfer of the line to the Piccadilly Line and replaced by a new building. According to the plans of Charles Holden , a building was created that combines functionalism and Art Deco . It consists of a massive block of red bricks towering above a flat, functional building with high ceilings that allow a lot of natural daylight to penetrate the generously dimensioned counter hall. The station has been under monument protection ( Grade II ) since 1994 , together with the neighboring substation.
