D'espairsRay (for notation see below ) was one of Tokyo native Japanese band. In the beginning they were mainly regarded as a visual kei band, due to the increasing musical and optical change in their last years they were often assigned to the more general term J-Rock . Outside of Japan, they also became known through tours in Europe and North America , including performing at the Wacken Open Air 2006. Due to persistent vocal cord problems of the singer Hizumi, the band decided to split up on June 15, 2011.

Band history

1999–2001: early years

Since the band was founded on September 9, 1999, the line-up of D'espairsRay consisted of singer Hizumi, guitarist Karyu, bassist Zero and drummer Tsukasa. Hizumi was playing in a band with a friend and invited Tsukasa to join in after reading his ad in a magazine. The resulting group called Le'veil recorded the demo tape Last Illusion before they broke up because their guitarist quit. Karyu, who previously played in Dieur Mind under the name Yoshitaka , invited both of them to Tokyo after seeing them perform live. Karyu had previously met Zero through a friend. Only Hizumi accepted the offer and drove to Tokyo. When asked who should sit behind the drums, Hizumi brought Tsukasa into play and persuaded him to come to Tokyo.

D'espairsRay started as a visual kei band and released their demo tape in December 1999 with the song Ao , which Karyu had written for Dieur Mind . They had their first appearance on September 24th at an event in the Takadanobaba AREA in front of around ten spectators. At the time, they still had to pay to perform live and struggled to meet the audience quotas. The future outlook was pessimistic. In 2000 the situation slowly improved and more demo tapes like [S] yste [M] and Sakura were released. After D'espairsRay adopted a more aggressive style, they gradually became more popular. The band played two to three live concerts a month and released the demo tape RAZØR in September .

Their first single, Kumo , was released in October and was produced by Shun and Tohru of the band JILS . Although it was their first "real" recording, there was no mastering or amplification . Hizumi recorded his vocals in the bathroom of his apartment for cost reasons , while drums and guitars were recorded in the studio. The 1000 records produced were quickly sold out and so they were invited to take part in the HYSTERIC MEDIA ZONE Omnibus. At that time, they also regularly met the audience quotas. In April 2001 their second maxi-single Genwaku was recorded, along with the songs for HYSTERIC MEDIA ZONE . On July 19, 2001 there was a premiere: D'espairsRay held their first self-organized concert called “[D] eep69 [R] ed” in the Takadanobaba AREA. According to the cover of the single Genwaku , the stage was covered with red knitting wool. This was followed by the first EP Terror , which was released in July. At this time the quartet first appeared in small magazines.

2002–2004: The road to success

In January they released the demo tape Ura mania theater , which could only be bought at Like an Edison . In June 2002 her second EP Sexual Beast was released, as well as a free compilation of private videos and concert recordings called Ura video . Then D'espairsRay began their first tour, which ran under the name Tour Mania Theater . This spanned nine concerts as well as a performance by Like an Edison on February 23. The tour finale on March 9th took place in the Osaka MUSE HALL. In addition, they came on stage in various encores under the name Animal Mania in animal costumes and swapped their roles.

Around the turn of the year 2002/2003, the group also thought about a possible separation, as they had lost confidence in their music. That is why the secret CD Itanji with a nameless song was released in January 2003 to test its musical transformation among the fans. The peculiarity of this single was its simple presentation, the stage name or the name of the songwriter was not revealed. There were only a few question marks there. The single could only be purchased from Like an Edison , and tickets were also distributed among the buyers for a secret live concert. D'espairsRay concerts continued to be given as camouflage. The musicians decided to break up the band if the single didn't sell well. But she did, the song was later called MaVERiCK and was the namesake for her next maxi single, which hit stores in February.

At this point they joined the “Sweet Child” label, which meant they no longer had to work part-time. However, the number of people who now worked with the band had to be paid by the band. At first they felt exploited and abandoned, but they got professional roadies and were able to record the single MaVERiCK in the Bazooka Studio. As a result, D'espairsRay were invited to various visual kei events such as the Beauti-fools Fest '03 , which is organized by Fool's Mate magazine and which also includes well-known bands in the visual kei and rock scene such as MUCC , The Gazette or solo artists like Miyavi took part. After asking the label to compose more melodic songs, they wrote the song Garnet , the complete opposite. The single and the music video - her first - were recorded in a professional studio. Zero had his head shaved and dreadlocks braided for this, which cost about 100,000 yen and led to protests from management. The maxi single Gärnet was in stores in November 2003 and made it to number one on the Oricon indie charts.

In April 2004, D'espairsRay released their third EP Born to a DVD for the music video of Garnet contained. Sugizo from Luna Sea played the violin intro for the B-side Marry of the Blood . A reprint was released in July, but without a DVD. Two months later the maxi single Gemini was released, a limited edition still had a DVD for the music video by Born . An additional one-man tour followed. This was divided into three concerts by D'espairsRay. On September 16, the “Bloody marry Day” took place at OSAKA MUSE, followed by “Furachi na toiki Day” on the 17th at Nagoya ell.FITS ALL. During “Murder Day” on the 23rd in the LIQUIDROOM ebisu in Tokyo, the material for their first live DVD was created. In 2004 they played outside of Japan for the first time on October 30th in Berlin and on the 31st in Paris . The mini foreign tour was entitled “Lust was given to the worm” from the poem An die Freude by Friedrich Schiller .

2005–2008: international breakthrough

Performed live at the JRock Revolution 2007 in California

In 2005, their first live DVD Murder Day Live was released. A music video for the song Reddish -Diva Version- was included as bonus material. Through the European tour, the desire to create an album that should also be released in Europe grew. For this they worked for the first time with Shinobu Narita, who later became their programmer and producer. Shortly afterwards in June D'espairsRay released their first music album Coll: set . The album brought the long-awaited breakthrough. Her maxi-single Gärnet was reissued for advertising purposes. In the same year the band had their first concerts in the USA . There they performed near an anime convention in San José , later they were in San Francisco and Dallas for two days , where they distributed flyers . At the end of 2005 they played again in Germany and France, this time together with the band Kagerou . In the subsequent US tour two performances were first with Genitorturers completed, the remaining with Trash Light Vision. On January 13, 2006 they released their album Coll: set on the European market at Gan-Shin . A documentary DVD entitled The World Outside the Cage (a reference to the song The World in a Cage ) of material from their last tour was released in March. In 2006 they switched to the label "Sword Records" during the Liquidize tour and performed at the Wacken Open Air in August of that year .

On September 8th and 9th, concerts took place in the Liquidroom ebisu, the second day of the concert being recorded on DVD. Another mini encore took place in the Shibuya BOXX immediately afterwards, which was announced via video at the end of the concert. Because of the smaller capacity of the BOXX, screens were installed outside, and the encore could also be followed on the screen in a neighboring café. In November 2006 they also went on a small tour in Europe together with Limbogott . The tour plan ran from Strasbourg on November 13th and Paris via Saarbrücken, Pratteln in Switzerland, Munich, Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg, Glauchau and Copenhagen to Helsinki on November 26th. At the end of 2006 her second live DVD [LIQUIDIZE] Yuugousuru Taion Tour 2006 was released.

For the new album Mirror , Karyu wanted to write songs that could be played at Wacken or similar festivals. The choice of the title song for the March single was already difficult, Karyu wanted TRICKSTeR , but the other band members decided on Squall . The last song on the album was supposed to be recorded in early March, but Karyu added Kaleidoscope three days beforehand , so the recordings ended with a day's delay. The album was their most successful at number 36 in the Oricon charts. In between, a short detour to the Pellissier Building and Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles was made on May 26, 2007 to play with Japanese bands such as Girugamesh , MUCC and Merry on the “Jrock Revolution 2007”. The year ended with the live DVD of the accompanying tour, the Spiral Staircase # 15 Final .

In 2008 they went on the “ Taste of Chaos ” tour with MUCC and Bullet for My Valentine, among others . On May 5th they played alongside bands like X Japan , Luna Sea and Dir En Gray as part of the Hide Memorial Summit in memory of Hide . The release of three singles in one year was exceptional, with the single Brilliant on May 14th, Kamikaze on August 6th and Horizon on December 3rd . The single Kamikaze was used as the ending song in the TBS Kei TV production Ranku oukoku (ラ ン ク 王国) in August and September . Excerpts from the film were used for the music video. Horizon was again used as background music for a TV production, this time MUSIC BB as the opening song. The new album Redeemer was also announced at the end of the year .

2009–2010: Under Major Label

On March 11, 2009 the album Redeemer was released on the label “Delicious Deli Records” from Universal Music Japan . The label was conceived as a major label. The release in the EU was done by Spinefarm Records , in the USA by “Hip-O Records”. At the same time the “PSYCHEDELIC PARADE Tour” was announced, which also led through Europe. With Moscow in the wake of "Psychedelic Parade in Europe 2009 Tour" was also the first time visited a Russian city. The tour schedule was tightly packed: In July alone, 10 live performances were completed in just three weeks. For the 10th birthday of the band, a free concert took place in the SHIBUYA-AX on September 9, 2009, which was limited to 1500 people. However, because the number 10 was to be emphasized even more, another birthday concert took place on October 1st, 2009 in the Shibuya CCLemon Hall. The concert was recorded and was available in stores from December 29, 2009 as 10 th Anniversary LIVE: Closer to ideal -Brand new Scene- .

In September the new single Final Call made it to number 16 on the Oricon charts and at the end of the year their first best-of album Immortal was in stores. On April 14, 2010, the band released the single Love is Dead and also announced another world tour that took them back to the USA in addition to Europe and Japan. The theme song rose to number 2 in the weekly ranking in the ringtone charts, and on July 4th it reached first place of the day. Furthermore, the band announced on their two-day show case at Shibuya O-East that they were busy producing a new album. The tour dates for Europe were also officially announced a day later. The album Monsters was released on July 28, 2010, followed by the "Human-clad Monsters" tour.

2011: Compulsory break and dissolution

The problems started with Hizumi's flu in March 2009 between the three gigs especially for the fan club and the PSYCHEDELIC PARADE tour. While the flu cleared, the cough persisted, so whooping cough was diagnosed. Contrary to the medical advice, the tour was completed under the influence of anti-inflammatory drugs . After the cough did not go away for months, it became chronic. Hizumi now took the anti-inflammatory drugs daily and in increasing doses, also as a preventive measure before singing, believing that it would end the cough. The tours were correspondingly painful and stressful, after the concerts he immediately withdrew to the tour bus and kept calm to recover his voice. In summer 2010 the other band members came up to him and it was decided to take a break. On the official Facebook page and their homepage, the band announced on September 21, 2010 that they would have to take an indefinite break in order to treat singer Hizumi's long-known vocal problems. The tour was played to the end. An allergy was discovered to be the cause of the cough , so it disappeared after drug treatment. After that, singer Hizumi went through rehabilitation to rebuild his vocal cords and muscles. How long this would take, however, was unclear, possibly months or years.

The concert DVD Human-clad Monsters FINAL of the corresponding tour with the final concert in Yokohama BLITZ was released on April 13th, together with the second best-of disc antique . The live DVD reached number 103 in the Oricon charts , making it their most successful. Another photo book was published on June 10, entitled [UN] Beautiful . Due to the ongoing problems with Hizumi's vocal cords and an unlikely improvement in this condition, the band decided to break up on June 15, 2011.

On June 18th, 21st and 22nd there was a performance in the TAKADANOBABA AREA under the name LUV PARADE together with smaller VK bands . Taka sang from defspiral while Hizumi designed the fan articles. They played cover songs by Marilyn Manson , Nirvana , Korn , hide and BUG and the songs Mirror and Love is Dead . On August 9th and 10th, the official fan club [un] beautiful went to Chiba .

In May 2014 it was announced via a newly created Twitter account that D'espairsRay would play with other VK bands on July 29, 2014. Angelo , of which guitarist Karyu is a member, gave a concert at Zepp Diver City Tokyo. FAKE ?, RIZE, and lynch were guests. and D'espairsRay. The concert was not announced as a comeback. It is also unknown how far Hizumi's recovery has progressed and whether there will be further performances in the future.

style

Music and lyrics

The songs were mostly dominated by Karyu's hard riffs and Hizumi's variable voice, which covered everything from melodic singing to screams and growls . The musical style of D'espairsRay changed over time: In the early stages of the band, the pieces of music had a consistently dark, oppressive and heavy atmosphere. The style was oriented between alternative , industrial and thrash metal . With the release of the singles Kogoeru Yoru ni Saita Hana and Squall , the repertoire was expanded to include pop music , even if the following album Mirror again picked up classic metal virtues such as hard riffs and a fast playing style. With the release of the Redeemer album , the style became a bit darker and melancholy again, which continued with the Monsters album . The A-sides of the singles were kept in pop-rock throughout and also serve as a playground for new style elements. In Horizon , for example, spoken chants were used in places , while Love is Dead used a techno rhythm and corresponding synthesizers.

While the texts used to focus mainly on despair (e.g. Infection or Oboro No Tsuki ), deal with the dying of loved ones (e.g. Yami Ni Furu Kiseki or Genshoku ) or ideas of the Christian religion (e.g. Abel to Cain or Tsuki no Kioku - traps - ) the topics expanded later. In addition to lovesickness (e.g. Squall or Final Call ), there were also texts that encouraged people to go their own way (e.g. Mirror or Death Point ). A little off the beaten track was Horizon , whose text hopefully announces a new world. Hizumi said in an interview that his old lyrics were too one-sided and that it was difficult to sing just those kinds of songs.

In the past, D'espairsRay, like many other visual kei bands, was not only characterized by their music, but also by their extreme appearance, consisting of a lot of patent leather, dark make-up, different colored contact lenses and extravagant clothing. Until the EP Terrors (2001), like in many typical visual kei bands, the hair was colored in a strikingly colorful way. The darker exterior was retained until the release of the album Coll: set and was based on the American band Marilyn Manson . After that, casual clothes and dark colors dominated the look. Exceptions were shortly after the release of the single Kogoeru Yoru ni Saita Hana in 2006 and during the live performance at the Hide Memorial Summit in 2008, where they appeared all in white. According to the band, her clothing style based on the music they were playing: One could Yozora not in dark clothing style of yesteryear perform because it was implausible.

Over time, the band's logo also changed several times. The first logo + DéspairsRay + was used until the single Maverick in February 2003, from Gärnet in November until the release of the first album Coll: set in 2005, the logo DéspairsRay was written. With the release of the single Kogoeru Yoru ni Saita Hana the following year, the logo was changed to broken font , the acute was left out and the apostrophe added. This was retained until the single Brilliant (2008), after which only D'ESPAIRSRAY was written until the breakup .

Band members

Hizumi

Hizumi ( 歪, dt. Distortion / bending ) was born on March 2nd in a small town in the Tōhoku region as the second son. He became interested in music late and only joined his first band towards the end of high school. Since the bassist Steve Harris of the band Iron Maiden was one of his great role models, he played bass. He only became a singer at the suggestion of a friend in a karaoke bar . Hizumi became aware of Tsukasa through an advertisement in a magazine, and the band Le'veil was formed . However, after recording Last Illusion , the group split because their guitarist quit. Since Karyu had seen the band live and was enthusiastic about their performance, he invited Hizumi and Tsukasa to join him in Tokyo. There Hizumi met Zero. After the chemistry was right, + DéspairsRay + was born.

Hizumi wrote the lyrics for almost all of the band's songs, from the single [Kumo] to MaVERiCK he was also responsible for the design. The coat of arms of the [LIQUIDIZE] -Yuugousuru Taion- Tour 2006 also came from him. In 2003 he also sang in the chorus of KISUI Project and on Over The Edge 2008 as a singer in the Session 2 Band. During this intermezzo he sang two Buck-Tick songs alongside Yuu, MASATO, YUKKE and Hiroshi Sasabuchi . On September 9th, 2008 for the 9th birthday of D'espairsRay, the musicians swapped roles in the second encore and so Hizumi plucked on bass for the songs Brilliant and Facism . According to his own statement , he covers songs on bass every now and then. He was the only non-smoker in the band. After D'espairsRay he started a design project with UMBRELLA.

Karyu

Karyu ( カ リ ュ ウ ) was born as the second son on December 7th in Yamaguchi , a city in the south of Honshūs . His first contact with music was while in middle school. He learned to play guitar, not on the acoustic guitar, but on an electric guitar. Since his father also played the guitar in a band, he gave him his own and taught his son. Long before he finished school, it was clear to him that he would go to Tokyo to become a musician. During his time in high school, his desire for a band grew and so he put an ad looking for members. The resulting band Dieur Mind did not last long, however, and even before he graduated from high school, they broke up again. On the final tour of his band, he met Zero and his group more or less by chance. Having met Hizumi and Tsukasa before, he called all three and invited them to Tokyo.

At that time he was still playing the drums and was studying at a music college on the side , but dropped out after six months. As the band's guitarist, Karyu composed around 90% of all songs and also wrote some of the lyrics, also in collaboration with Tsukasa or Shinobu Narita (their programmer and producer). He was drawn to the subject through the film Interview with a Vampire ; when he started + DéspairsRay +, he did so as “Vampire KARYU”. Since MaVERiCK he changed the name to Karyu. In 2005, he bought a white electric guitar from a guitar store in California after Acey Slade encouraged him to buy it. All of his guitar models are from the ESP Guitar Company . In 2008 he added another white model with black tribals to his collection , which he designed himself (ESP Micawber). For the band's 9th birthday, he was once again behind a drum kit himself. At a performance in the NHK Hall he also played a theremin once . After D'espairsRay he joined the band Angelo as a guitarist.

Tsukasa

Tsukasa ( 司, German head, civil servant or administrator ) saw the light of day on March 6th in Yamagata as the first of two children. From an early age he wanted to become a singer of folk songs and be part of a school wind orchestra. When he played the recorder in middle school , he was accepted into the wind orchestra and took over the tenor saxophone . After his first year in high school, he learned the drums . One of his friends played guitar in a band and so he urged them to join as a drummer. They decided to perform as a band at the annual Fall School Festival, where they played four pieces by Metallica . After high school he started working in a publishing house and also played in the band on the side. With the desire for a permanent group, Tsukasa put up an ad and looked for members to expand the band and partly to recruit. Among the four answers was Hizumi's. Tsukasa broke up his high school band and joined Le'veil instead . At one of their numerous concerts, the two met Karyu, who wanted to win them over to his next band. When Le'veil broke up, the course was set. Tsukasa quit his job and made his way to Tokyo.

Tsukasa, whose pseudonym comes from a drinking binge , was also the band leader of D'espairsRay after Karyu had given him the office. From the beginning of 2006 until the spring of the following year he hosted the Internet radio show “Maniac Station” on Starchildren24.com, where he gave a look behind the scenes of the band. The show experienced a brief revival in the spring of 2008 on the member's page of the fan club and from April to October 2009 in the Nack5 Streaming Club. For the band's 9th birthday, he sang the songs Brilliant and Facism , although he doesn't think he has the right voice for this type of music. Gackt selected him in 2009 to play the drums in his music video for Setsugekka-The end of silence- / ZAN , as well as in 2011 together with Zero for the single Episode.0 . At some concerts, Tsukasa also gave a serenade on the flute . His drums come from the Japanese Pearl Musical Instrument Company . After the band split up , he joined the band THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S with Zero .

zero

Zero ( 零 dt. Zero, fraction ) was born on July 31st in Saitama near Tokyo as the first of three children. At the age of two he was hit by a truck and seriously injured, resulting in broken bones and internal injuries. In elementary school he became the first boy soprano voice, when his voice broke, he learned to play the harmonica . Through a friend he came into contact with visual kei and the J-rock band Boøwy . Since he regularly listened to Van Halen and Bauhaus albums in the nearby library , he wanted to learn to play the guitar himself. In high school, he and a friend started a buck-tick association, which was disbanded after almost ten months. His next band lacked a bass player, so he switched to this instrument. At a concert he met Karyu, whose drummer at Dieur Mind went to the same high school as Zero. Later he was invited by Karyu to Tokyo, where he met his colleagues.

Since Zero taught himself to play the guitar and bass , he made slow progress, and so he called himself 零 -ZERO-. Since May 2003 he has dispensed with the introduced kanji零 (Rei) for zero. Later he took lessons in bass from Toshihiro Nara. In the course of his development at D'espairsRay he switched from a black four-string bass to one with five strings, which was specially designed for him by ESP (ESP TRICKSY). For the 9th birthday and at the free concert for the 10th anniversary, Zero swapped places with Karyu and played on his electric guitar. In 2011 he starred for Gackts single Episode.0 with Tsukasa. Zero spends a lot of time on social networks , so most of the band's posts were usually created by him. After the band split up, he joined the band THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S together with Tsukasa .
