Immortal ( English for immortal ) is the first best-of- album by the J-rock band D'espairsRay . The release took place in Japan on December 29, 2009 and in Europe on May 28, 2010.

Emergence

On September 9th, 2009 the band's tenth anniversary was due. But since the number 10 was wanted to be emphasized even more, another birthday concert took place on October 1st, 2009 in the Shibuya CC Lemon Hall. The concert was recorded and was available in stores from December 29th, 2009 as 10th Anniversary LIVE: Closer to ideal -Brand new Scene- . The regular pressing of the DVD also contains a booklet with credits and some band history and the bonus film "2009.9.9 SHIBUYA-AX Document eizou". The bonus film is a compilation of their free special concert on September 9th, exactly for the actual birthday. In addition to the DVD, the limited version contains a photo booklet, a T-shirt and a tag in a protective box .

On the same day, their first best-of album Immortal was released. The original intention was to select songs for this collection that had made a lasting impression live. Ultimately, however, it was decided to use songs that best represent the musical development of the band. The songs all come from the band's indies time.

A DVD was included for the European market. It contains live performances from the Spiral Staircase: Outflies tour, which took place at the end of 2007.

As already mentioned, the songs should represent the development of the band. Ori no naka de miru yume , which opened the best-of, was one of their first ballads. MaVERiCK as a single of their musical change and the song Garnet , with which they took first place in the Oricon indie charts , are also included as the beginning of their success. For Garnet turned D'espairsRay her first music video , which in the limited edition EP Born was included on a bonus DVD. They were also able to win Sugizo for the recordings, who played the violin intro for them in the song Marry of the Blood .

After the ballad Yami ni furu kiseki there are popular songs like [Fuyuu shita risou] , Forbidden and Abel to Cain , which mark the band's metal career. The next quieter song, Kogoeru Yoru ni Saita Hana, marks a new era with its pop-rock sound. With songs like Closer to ideal , MIЯROR and Cocoon the musical development of the last years is traced. Her last indies single Horizon concludes .

The European edition of Immortal also includes a DVD with unpublished recordings from the “Spiral Staircase: Outflies” tour from the end of 2007. The ballad Yami Ni Furu Kiseki stands in contrast to the heavier songs on the DVD. Despite its popularity, it has not yet been featured on any live DVD. The emotionally performed song captivates with an a cappella passage in which Hizumi lets his penetrating voice echo through the concert hall without a microphone.

According to Powermetal.de , Immortal is not as crazy as some other genre output, not as aggressive as the metallic side of the visual kei spectrum and not quite as wild as J-Rock itself. But the record would be so diverse Potential that it would eventually become a classic.

Metal Hammer says Immortal would n't make D'espairsRay immortal, but it's a great anniversary CD and more than just a compilation of their hits.

The album was described by jame-world.com as an inexpensive alternative, which would bring an additional purchase incentive with the DVD. The collection is not only worth a look for fans, but also for all those who want to become one. It was criticized that the new mix and the fine tuning made the songs sound a bit fuller here and there, but that new versions of the songs from their live concerts could not be found on the CD.
