[Coll: set] is the first studio album by the visual kei band D'espairsRay . It was released on June 29, 2005 in Japan and January 13, 2006 in Europe. In the USA, the album could only be purchased from May 25, 2010.
Emergence
In February 2002 D'espairsRays “secret single ” Itanji was released , which could be taken free of charge to concert appearances. The specialty was their simple presentation and the lack of artist name and songwriter, which had been replaced by a few question marks. The single MaVERiCK was completed between January 13th and 22nd, the release took place on February 12th, 2003. The song Itanji appeared there as MaVERiCK . The limited edition of 5000 pieces was reissued on March 26th.
After performing with their first one-man in LIQUIDROOM in Shinjuku on April 27th, they advertised the second press of MaVERiCK on May 5th on Saitama TV on Hot Wave . At the end of May they were on stage at the stylish wave'03 Mega Force in Shibuya Kokaidou , on June 19 they could be seen at a two-man with Schwarz Stein in the Takadanobaba AREA . More live performances followed, and a new single called Gärnet was announced. On November 12th, the time had come, the single was on the store shelves and took first place in the Oricon indie charts . This was the first time they stood in front of the camera for a music video. By so increased popularity they were on 28 December for Beauti-fool's Fest 03 in the Tokyo Bay NK Hall invited. Miyavi , Deadman and the Gazette were among them .
Their second EP Born was released on April 28, 2004. The limited edition not only contained the music video for Garnet on a bonus DVD, but also a hidden track . They were also able to win Sugizo (then Luna Sea ) for the recordings, who played the violin intro for them in the song Marry of the Blood . For the next single -GEMINI- , which was released on September 1, 2004, the music video for Born was shot. The single made it to number 2 in the indie charts. -GEMINI- was the first single from D'espairsRay which came out in two versions: A limited and the regular version. The principle of offering at least two versions of a CD has been retained until today.
After further tours in Japan, including the Murder Day concert on September 23, 2004 in the LIQUIDROOM (Ebisu, Tokyo), a trip abroad took place for the first time. The tour entitled “Lust was given to the worm” (a line from Friedrich Schiller's poem An die Freude ) included a performance on October 30th in Berlin and one day later in Paris. Both shows were sold out - with no poster advertising. Among other things, Arte reported on it.
Through the European tour, the desire to create an album grew, which should also be released in Europe. For this they worked for the first time with Shinobu Narita, who later became their programmer and producer. The work on this began immediately after their return to Japan and was difficult because it was their first album. In retrospect, Karyu says they approached the album too lightly. On the one hand, they did not want to compromise, but on the other hand they were impatient. The right combination of text and music was also difficult. Even before it was released, their first live DVD Murder Day was released on April 1st, which also contained the music video for Reddish -DIVA version- . On June 15th the limited pressing of [Coll: set] was published with a special booklet and with a special design, followed on June 29th by the regular version of their first album, which made it to number 8 in the indies album charts.
trip
The so-called Premium-One-Man-Tour [Secret Coll: set] started on July 29th and included four appearances and lasted until August 2nd. From October 6th they started the kagerou x DéspairsRay COUPLING TOUR 2005 ~ Ryuugai no kannou ~ with Kagerou . Due to the continued success, a second pressing of the single Gärnet was launched in mid-October . With Kagerou they came to Munich on October 21 and to Paris on October 23. A contract with Gan-Shin was also signed during the tour . After Europe, the West Coast of the United States was visited with the -Infectious Mania Act II- tour until early November 2005. This was followed by the BEAT SHUFFLE LIVE SIDE 2005 ~ 7th Anniversary ~ in Japan, where they were in the spotlight alongside artists such as MUCC , Nightmare , Sid and Merry.
They performed for the Global Infection US tour on February 23, 2006 in New York and three days later at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida. In the meantime, the label in Japan made a compilation of selected recordings that the four band members had taken with their own cameras the year before. After a one-off postponement, the complete work was released on March 8th as the tour documentary The World Outside The Cage on DVD.
On August 4th they performed at the beginning of their European tour at the Wacken Open Air 2006. The following 14 shows of the European tour in November 2006 were completely sold out.
style
The style of the album moves between mostly alternative and industrial metal . Characteristic for the album is the consistently gloomy, oppressive and heavy atmosphere of the pieces of music. Examples of this are the songs Infection and Garnet with slow rhythms and restrained riffs, guttural singing is rarely used here.
Heavy guitar riffs, distortion effects and synthesizer sounds as well as continuous screaming down to the chorus characterize In Vain . Forbidden seems very unpolished and trashy with its hard riffs and Hizumi's variable voice, which covers everything from singing to screams and growls and is partially underlaid with distortion effects.
Typical Thrash Metal is Grudge , which combines fast guitar riffs and shredders with high tempo. Abel and Cain fits nicely into Nu Metal , with hard riffs and distortion effects. The fast and aggressive Fuyuu Shita Risou combines Thrash Metal with Screams.
With its fast riffs and driving drums, Dears and Tainted World seem like a cross between rock music and metal. Clear vocals and a catchy chorus create a rock atmosphere here.
Tsuki no Kioku -Fallen- is a bit ballad- like , with clear, calm vocals and typically industrial, enriched with samples and backed by synthesizers. The song Hai to Ame (灰 と 雨) is the band's second ballad after Yami ni furu kiseki on the EP Born . This was the first time that string accompaniment and piano were used, but guitar riffs and elements typical of industrial metal were still included.
The originals of the remixes Marry of the Blood -Bloody Minded Mix- and Born -White Stream Mix- are taken from the EP Born . For the album, the songs were heavily distorted and slowed down a bit.
reception
laut.de thinks that [Coll: set] is a production which would reach international standards and could definitely convince. The unusual richness of variety was praised, with which D'espairsRay would happily plow through all styles of the harder guitar. Interesting exceptions were Tsuki No Kioku - Fallen - , Garnet and Forbidden . Singer Hizumi would convince with his very variable voice, with which he would not only put some very beautiful melodies on tape, but also deliver a solid performance as a shouter or a little psychotic screamer . If you wouldn't be put off by the whole image and visual kei hype, you should risk an ear here.
[Coll: set] was the only D'espairsRay album that was not distributed by a music label in the US . On April 20, distribution was taken over by Maru Music, along with the best-of album Immortal . The US release took place on May 25, 2010.

Garnet
The single hit store shelves on November 12, 2003 and took first place in the Oricon indie charts. For the song Garnet turned D'espairsRay their first music video. The single is written with heavy metal umlaut , the title song is not. Due to the high demand, a new edition was produced on October 19, 2005.
