the GazettE , until 2006 Gazette ( ガ ゼ ッ ト , gazetto from Cassette ), is a Japanese rock band formed in 2002. It occurs in a visual kei style .

Band history

2002: Foundation and beginnings

In 2002 Gazette was founded by Ruki, Uruha, Reita (all three ex- Ma'die Kusse and ex- Kar + te = zyAnose ), Aoi and Yune (both ex- Artia ).

The single 別 れ 道 (Wakaremichi) was released in April of the same year, simultaneously with her first video Senchimentaru Video and セ ン チ メ ン タ ル な 鬼 ご っ こ (Sentimental Onigokko) . A few months later, in October 2002, the singles 鬼畜 教師 (32 才 独身) の 悩 殺 講座 (Kichiku Kyoushi -Dokushin 32-sai Dokushin- no nousatsu kouza) and Gozen 0-ji no Trauma Radio and the video were released under the Matina label titre non défini .

2003: New drummer and first appearances

At the beginning of 2003, drummer Yune left the band and was replaced by ex-Mareydi † Creia drummer Kai in February. In March 2003 the label PS Company signed Gazette, where they released their first EP Cockayne Soup .

They started their first real tour in May together with the band Hanamuke , with whom they also wrote two songs. They went on the second tour with the band Vidoll . As a result, they appeared on the cover of the music magazine Cure . In early December they gave a two-man show along with Deadman. They also appeared at Fool's Mate magazine's Beauti-fool's Fest '03 music event with MUCC , Merry , Miyavi , D'espairsRay , Deadman , Gullet and Daigo ☆ Stardust .

2004: promotion and first album

Gazette gave their first big one-man concert on January 16, 2004, which was released as DVD on April 28, 2004 under the name Tokyo saihan ~ JUDGMENT DAY ~ 2004.1.16 SHIBUYA-AX LIVE DVD . Her official fan club also opened on that day .

On March 30th they released their first mini-album MADARA , which made it to number 2 on the Oricon Indie Charts. In May the DVD Madara was released, on which 6 music videos as well as the making-of of the songs and the mini-album of the same name could be seen. That same month, Gazette was featured in Shoxx magazine, which specializes in Japanese visual kei bands. The rise of the band seemed unstoppable and so they released their DVD Heisei Banka on August 25, 2004 .

In September and October they were on another tour with Kra and Bis and released their first album Disorder on October 13th , which made it to number 5 on the Oricon Daily Charts. The turn of the year was accompanied by intensive tours.

2005-2006: NIL and Nameless Liberty Six Guns

On March 9, 2005, Gazette released the single Reila in three versions: [reila] Lesson. G , [reila] Lesson. O and [reila] Lesson. D . The first two versions contain two songs and a bonus song, the third contains the making of the PV instead of an extra song. On August 3, 2005 the EP 蛾 蟇 (Gama) was released, and in December the single Cassis . In October, the band's first photobook, Verwelktes Gedicht , was published, the pictures of which had been taken on the Riegersburg in Austria to match the German name . The music video for the single Cassis was also shot there.

The year 2006 began with a change: From now on the band name was only written in Romanized script and changed from Gazette ( ガ ゼ ッ ト ) to the GazettE . According to singer Ruki, the reasons for this were purely visual, the lettering should look like a logo to the viewer. There was also the second album NIL on February 8th, as well as an accompanying tour, which ended appropriately with a final concert at Nippon Budōkan .

On July 29th and 30th, 2006 Gazette gave their first concert in Europe in Bonn , where the anime convention AnimagiC was taking place at the same time . Two months earlier, on May 29, 2006, their album NIL was released in Europe for the first time .

2007–2009: Stacked Rubbish and DIM

Three more singles were released before another studio album, Stacked Rubbish , hit stores. It reached number 3 on the Oricon charts . The album was followed by a promo tour from July to September. In October 2007 they started a European tour through England, Finland, France and Germany, where they also came to Berlin, Cologne and Munich, among others. The concerts in Finland and a few in Germany were sold out after a short time.

On February 13, 2008 the single 紅蓮 (Guren) was released, which landed at number 3 of the Oricon ranks. In November Leech followed , which reached rank 2. In 2008 the one-man tour From the Distorted City was also carried out. On November 15th, a "secret performance" was held at Shinjuku Station. Instead of the expected 250 people, over 7,000 came, so the Japanese police had to cancel the event.

On March 25, 2009, the single Distress and Coma was released, in the summer the fourth album DIM , which was released for the first time simultaneously in Japan and Europe. This was followed by a month-long tour of Japan, which ended in the Saitama Super Arena . The single Before I Decay hit record stores on October 7, 2009.

Since 2010: The End of Stillness, Toxic

After a Christmas concert at the Tokyo Big Sight at the end of 2009, it was quite quiet around the band until the fan club tour that started in March. After the one-month tour through all of Japan in unusually small halls, the band immediately announced further plans. Accordingly, a single was released on July 21, a month later a new music video collection, and a major tour was announced.

On July 21, 2010, the day before the tour opening concert at Nippon Budōkan , the single Shiver was released . The song is the band's first piece to be used in an anime, Kuroshisuji II.

During the tour "Nameless Liberty Six Bullets -01-" and the performance in Kochi, the singer Ruki lost his voice and was diagnosed with a virulent vocal cord inflammation after an examination. A number of appearances had to be postponed as a result.

On September 22, 2010 the single Red was released, followed in December by the single Pledge .

In April 2011 the live DVD The Nameless Liberty was released at 10.12.26 Tokyo Dome , which contains the tour finale in the Tokyo Dome . The single Vortex was released in May. In August, Ruki and Aoi performed at the Peace & Smile Carnival 2011 7 Days . Ruki played with his session band LU / V and Aoi with the session band aoi with bon: cra-z . Gazette also performed at Summer Sonic 2011 in Tokyo on August 13 and in Osaka on August 14.

The new single Remember the Urge was released on August 31, 2011, the new album Toxic was released on October 5. On October 10th 2011 her live tour 11 Venomous Cell started , which took her once more through Japan.

While the fan club used to be part of the PSC Global Fan Club, it disbanded and since 2013 it has been possible to register in the separate Heresy Fan Club. This only includes the band and not, as usual, all the bands of the PS Company. A registration portal has also been set up for international fans.

style

The style of the GazettE varies a lot, but is mostly based on rock . Otherwise there is Heavy Metal ( Ogre ), Alternative Metal ( 体温 (Taion) , The Invisible Wall ), Funk Rock ( Silly God Disco , Swallowtail on the Death Valley ), Hard Rock ( LEECH , Hyena ) and Metalcore ( Maggots , Discharge , Headache Man ) everything included. The music makes heavy use of synthesizers , with female backing vocals as in Filth in the Beauty . Ballads like 泣 ヶ 原 (Nakigahara) , 紅蓮 (Guren) and Cassis are also included in the repertoire . In more recent albums ( Toxic, Division, Beautiful Deformity ) you can also find a rather electro-heavy sound.

What is striking about the appearance of the band members is their androgynous demeanor, their costumes and their hairstyles, which makes them one of the most popular bands on the visual kei scene.

Design projects

In addition to music, the band members are also involved in the design of jewelry and accessories. It all started by Reita, who will be launching his third line of collaboration with Juwelier Deal Design in May 2010 .

Other projects include Ruki's eyewear designs with [[Abnormal [Eye] Dentity]] and leather designs with Modern Pirates . As a band, the GazettE also worked with Kyoto jeweler Gem Cerey . Ruki ran the cosmetic brand Vital Material for a short time , but distanced himself from it after disagreements.

In addition to the individual projects, the band has been running the Rad Market by Blackmoral online shop since 2014 . This is also available online for international fans. However, some products require a membership in the Heresy fan club to purchase.
