JPU Records is a music company from London , United Kingdom , founded in 2012 , which specializes in the publication and marketing of Japanese musicians and bands of all genres.

history

The company was founded by Tom Smith, who is himself a fan of Japanese popular music and wanted to find a way to bring it to the UK . He cited difficulties in obtaining Japanese music in the western market as the reason for founding JPU Records.

The label was founded by accident. Smith ran an underground music club where he organized several events himself and played as a DJ . There he also played popular music from Japan, which attracted a large number of people. The company JETRO asked Smith, a survey carried out in which it was darung as British distributor respond to Japanese music would. JETRO later met with various distribution labels who would be willing to distribute Japanese musicians in the UK if Smith founded a music label.

The first album that JPU Records released in Europe was division of the visual kei band The GazettE . In an interview it was revealed that Division achieved sales almost four times higher than previous releases by the band. The follow-up album Beautiful Deformity was also released on the label before other artists were signed. These were found in Boom Boom Satellites , Polysics, and SPYAIR . In 2016 it was revealed that band maids promoted by UK Metal Hammer and NEO had overtaken The GazettE as the best-selling artist. In the same year, the NEO readers voted the company in the Best Specialist Company category at the NEO Awards .

Band-Maid, signed in 2016, played their very first concert in Europe at MCM London Comic Con in May of the same year.
