Asian Kung-Fu Generation , also Ajikan ( ア ジ カ ン ) or AKG , is a J-rock band from Japan , consisting of singers and guitarists Kensuke Kita and Masafumi Gotō, singer and bassist Takahiro Yamada and drummer Kiyoshi Ijichi.

Band history

In 1996 the band met for the first time at Kantō Gakuin University . It was the first band ever for Gotō, Kita and Yamada. Ijichi joined the band a short time later. He'd played in another band at a previous college.

In 2000 the band released their first independent album with six English-language songs. The CD was only sold at the clubs they played in and on the Internet at the time. In 2001 the band recorded their first Japanese-written song Kona Yuki ( 粉 雪 , dt powder snow ) and sent the recordings to various independent radio stations. From 2001 the band had regular appearances in cities like Shibuya , Shimokitazawa and Kichijo-ji .

In 2003 the album Hōkai Amplifier ( 崩 壊 ア ン プ リ フ ァ ー ) was released by the record company Ki / oon Records , which was able to position itself at number 35 on the Oricon charts. With the singles Mirai no Kakera ( 未来 の 破 片 ) and Kimi to iu Hana ( 君 と い う 花 ) they made the breakthrough.

Their first real album, Tsunagi Five M ( 君 繋 フ ァ イ ブ エ ム ) sold over 25,000 copies and landed at number 5 on the Oricon charts in its first week. In the summer of 2003 the band played at festivals such as the Fuji Rock Festival , Rookie a Go Go and the Summer Sonic in Tokyo and Osaka . The following year, the band won in the Space Shower Music Video Awards for their music video for Kimi to iu Hana the Best New Artist Video Award and the award for the best music video. Later in 2004, the band released other singles, including Rewrite ( リ ラ イ ト ), which was the opening song for the anime Fullmetal Alchemist , and Haruka Kanata , which was used for Naruto and After Dark for Bleach . Her next album Sol-fa ( ソ ル フ ァ ) made it to the top of the charts for two weeks with over 600,000 copies sold.

In 2005, AKFG released a DVD that was number 1 in the Oricon DVD charts for a month and played the Re: Re: tour . They also took part in the Nano-Mugen Festival along with eight other bands . The band started the year 2006 with successful album releases and another Nano-Mugen-Festival , this time with the participation of 12 bands, was completed. That year World Apart hit the charts as the first single.

In 2009 the song Shinseiki no Love Song was released. It was also later released on the Magic Disk album. After all, the album was sold 135,000 times. In 2010 the single Maigoinu to ame no Beat came out and was used as the opening of the Madhouse anime " The Tatami Galaxy ".

In January 2012, the band's first best-of album called Best AKG was released , on which the single Marching Band (マ ー チ ン グ バ ン ド) released in 2011 is also available. After the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in 2012, the band campaigned for the shutdown of these power plants. On November 4, 2012, the single Kakato de Ai wo Uchinarase (踵 で 愛 を 打 ち な ら せ) was released and is one of the two single releases from the album Landmark. The other coupling is Sore Dewa, Mata Ashita (そ れ で は 、 ま た 明日). This was used as the ending of the sixth Naruto Shippuden film "Road to Ninja".

The band released the compilation album Feedback File 2 on February 26, 2014, which contains B-side songs of their singles that were released after the first issue. Masafumi Gotō released the single The Long Goodbye back in 2013 under the stage name Gotch . On March 12, 2014, his second single Wonderland was released . Both songs are on the debut album (as solo artist) Can't Be Forever Young, which will be released on April 30, 2014 . In 2014 Gotch goes on the Can't Be Forever Young tour.

The band returned in March 2015 with the single Easter (復活 祭). The rock group also released the single Right Now at the beginning of 2016.

On June 13, 2016, the group released the single Blood Circulator (ブ ラ ッ ド サ ー キ ュ レ ー タ), which was also used as the opening of the anime Naruto Shippuden . At the end of 2016, the newly recorded Sol-fa ( ソ ル フ ァ ) was released. The newly recorded song Rewrite ( リ ラ イ ト ) was also released in November 2016, but a few months earlier the newly sung song Re: Re: was used as the opening theme for the Erased .

It has been announced that the theme song for the anime film adaptation Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome (夜 は 短 し 歩 け よ 乙 女), which was released on March 29, 2017, will be contributed by Asian Kung-Fu Generation. The song is called Kouya wo Aruke (荒野 を 歩 け) The novel was also written by the same novelist as The Tatami Galaxy .
