Night is Short, Walk on Girl ( Japanese. 夜 は 短 し 歩 け よ 乙 女 , Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome ) is an anime film from 2017. The production by Studio Science Saru won the Japanese Academy Award in the Award for Best Animated Film category. The film is based on a light novel by Tomihiko Morimi with illustrations by Yūsuke Nakamura .

A young student wants to use her invitation to a wedding to party and drink through the night for the first time in her life. Also at the wedding there is a fellow student who has been in love with her for a long time and finally wants to confess his love to her, which he previously did not dare to do. But while the girl makes off from the wedding party and wants to explore the nightlife in Kyoto , the lover fails to follow her and gets into trouble again and again.

While the student impresses the “bedroom researcher” Todo and the night owls Higuchi and Hanuki in a bar with their fondness for alcohol and their ability to drink, her fellow student's underpants are stolen. In search of this he also meets Todo. After sneaking out to various celebrations with her, Higuchi and Hanuki decide that the girl should drink against the legendary Rihaku. You will eventually find him in his three-story boat. At the same time, the student finds the thief of his underpants in Rihaku. The cheerful student wins the drinking competition against the depressed Rihaku with ease and receives a rare schnapps as thanks.

Then she goes to the book market in the hope of finding the book "Ratatatam" from her childhood. There she meets the god of the book market, again Higuchi and Hanuki and a guerrilla theater group. Against the will of the head of the university festival, it performs short pieces at different locations. The boss with his university secret service tries everything to restore order. And as his friend, he also gives his fellow student the tip to get the girl the book "Ratatatam". He finally succeeds in a food competition, but the girl has long been at the university.

At the festival, the fight between the guerrilla theater and the university secret service escalates. The student takes on the female lead after all the actresses in front of her are caught. For the last act, the author of the play, Don Unterhose, wants to find the woman in the audience in the male lead, with whom he fell in love the year before. He organized all of this just to get their attention. The fellow student wants to push him off the stage to confess his love to the girl. He fails while Don Unterhose learns that his lover was in truth the disguised boss of the university festival. Now his theater assistant makes him a love confession, which he accepts after some back and forth.

At the end of the turbulent night, everyone is sick at home because they caught the flu together. Only the girl is healthy and visits the acquaintances of the night to help them. She learns of the student's love for her and ends the evening with a visit to her. He finally dares to confess his love to her and they become a couple.

Production and publication

The anime was created by Studio Science Saru under the direction of Masaaki Yuasa . Makoto Ueda wrote the script . The character design was created by Nobutake Ito together with Yūsuke Nakamura and the animations were created under the direction of Takayuki Hamada and Tomohisa Shimoyama. The music was composed by Michiru Oshima and the credits are underlaid with the song Kōya o Aruke ( 荒野 を 歩 け ) by Asian Kung-Fu Generation .

The 91-minute film was released in Japanese cinemas on April 7, 2017. The UK theatrical premiere was on October 4th and the US theatrical release in August 2018. Kazé acquired the license for Germany and showed the film in the German dubbed version as part of the Anime Nights series on October 30, 2018. The release on DVD is announced for January 2019.

In the opening week, the film reached number 7 in the box office in Japan. In the US, the anime grossed $ 350,000 in its first week.

At the 41st Japanese Academy Awards (2018), Night is Short, Walk on Girl was awarded the prize for Best Animated Film. He had previously won the Grand Prix of the Ottawa International Film Festival in September 2017 and came third in the Audience Award of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal in August 2017.
