Boom Boom Satellites ( Japanese ブ ン ブ ン サ テ ラ イ ツ , Bun Bun Sateraitsu ) is the name of a former Japanese music duo. It consisted of Michiyuki Kawashima and Masayuki Nakano and mainly produced pieces belonging to the genre Big Beat or Nu-Skool Breaks . The duo was signed to Sony Music Entertainment Japan until Michiyuki Kawasima's death on October 9, 2016, and had released almost all of their albums under this record label .

Career

The bassist / DJ Masayuki Nakano and the guitarist / singer Michiyuki Kawashima founded the band Boom Boom Satellites in 1990. While still attending university, they took the band name from a title by Sigue Sigue Sputnik . They made their debut with the single Dub Me Crazy , which was included in the compilation Abstract Set One by DJ Fumiya Tanaka . DJ Fumiya Tanaka helped the two to get a contract with the Belgian record label R&S Records , which Ken Ishii had signed shortly before. In 1997 they played at a techno festival in Belgium and appeared at larger events such as the Glastonbury Festival , Roskilde , SXSW or Fuji Rock . They were on tour with well-known greats such as Fatboy Slim , Underworld (1998) and Moby (1999).

After the initial success and praise in large magazines such as New Musical Express and Melody Maker , Sony Music Entertainment Japan also expressed its interest. So in 1999 they released their first album Out Loud , which promised the band's breakthrough. Their second album Umbra was received more critically, but was still able to continue the success story. Despite their contract with Sony Music Entertainment Japan , the musicians spent a lot of time in London from 2000 to 2004 . After a few smaller, lesser-known albums, another successful album, Full of Elevating Pleasures , was released in March 2005 , which was followed by a major tour across Japan.

In 2010 the group released their best-of album "OVER AND OVER" across America and went on tour there in October of the same year.

In 2016 it was announced that Boom Boom Satellites will play the theme song "Lay Your Hands on Me" for the anime Kiznaiver . The version of the song used in the anime was released as a single on April 17, 2016. In addition, a short video, the full version of the song and an EP with three other songs were released in May and June 2016. On the EP's release date, Nakano announced on the band's official website and on social media that the EP for “Lay Your Hands on Me” would be the duo's final release. The reason for this is Kawashima's cancer, which broke out for the fourth time and led to partial paralysis. Nakano also said that the EP "Lay Your Hands on Me" is a fitting end to her career. On October 9, 2016, four months after the group stopped its activities, Kawashima died as a result of his illness at the age of 47.
