Band-Maid is a hard rock / heavy metal band from the Japanese capital Tokyo, founded in 2013 .

history

Band-Maid was founded in July 2013 by guitarist and singer Miku Kobato (actually Mika Noguchi), who was working in a Maid Cafe at the time. Her vision was to juxtapose the fundamentally different images of maids and rock music . Via an Internet search, she recruited lead guitarist Kanami Tōno, who had previously been active as a singer-songwriter , and Akane Hirose brought along as a drummer . Via Hirose, in turn, the musicians became aware of bassist Misa, whom Hirose knew through the music school . Saiki Atsumi was integrated into the band through a casting .

In January 2014, Maid, the group's first mini-album , was released in Japan . In November 2015, the second mini-album New Beginning was released . In March of the following year, the band played their first concert outside of Japan at the Sakura-Con in Seattle , Washington state . After Band-Maid had signed a recording contract with Crown Stones , a subsidiary of Nippon Crown , the third mini-album, Brand New Maid , was released. Her record Maid, released in 2014, was also reissued by the record company in Japan . In October and November 2016 the band played their first world tour, which included Hong Kong , Mexico and six European countries. The band gave their first concert in Europe in May of the same year at the MCM Comic Con in the British capital, London .

The debut album Just Bring It was released in January 2017, preceded by the single YOLO , which was released in November of the previous year . The band was part of the 2017 Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan , which took place on June 23 and 24, 2017. Band-Maid covered the song Honey by the Japanese band MUCC for a tribute album that was released in November of the same year. In February 2018, World Domination, the group's second album, was released, which will be advertised with a tour in April. The band is also part of the Warped Tour in Japan , which took place on April 1st, 2018 at Makuhari Messe .

Band maiko

On March 31, 2018, the band released a video under the pseudonym Band-Maiko with the title secret Maiko lips . In this, the musicians appear dressed in classic geisha robes and play a new version of the title secret My lips, originally published on the album Just Bring It . Classical Japanese instruments used by geishas can be heard in it. The lyrics are also sung in a Kyoto dialect. This was originally intended as an April Fool's joke, but it was so well received by the fans that the band released another video under the pseudonym on April 1, 2019. The specially composed title "祇 園 町" ( Gion-cho ) is presented. These two tracks were released along with five other tracks on the Band-Maiko album.

Gion is the geisha district of Kyoto and geisha are called maiko in training.

style

Occur

The band's appearance is based on the service in Japanese maid cafes . In interviews, the musicians explained that the concept came from the band's founder, Miku Kobato, who had worked at the Noodol Cafe in Akihabara before starting her music career . This concept is reinforced by the band, who refer to their male fans as Masters , female fans as Princesses and their concerts as Servings . The submissive demeanor of the musicians should be seen as a contrast to the aggressive rock style.

music

Band founder Kobato draws her musical inspiration from Enka music and attended a singing school in 2012, but began to play electric guitar when the band was founded. Singer Atsumi started singing at the age of 14. Influenced by Carlos Santana , lead guitarist Tōno learned to play the classical piano as a child and taught herself to play guitar when she joined the high school band. Drummer Hirose is a fan of Deep Purple and Maximum the Hormone ; she is influenced by the drummer Nao Kawakita , who plays in the latter group. Hirose is also able to play tuba and piano. Bassist Misa is a fan of the Smashing Pumpkins and Jimi Hendrix . She started playing the piano at the age of 3 or 4, learning to play the trumpet , alto horn and guitar on the side. She explained in interviews that she switched to the bass guitar after hearing about bassist Paz Lenchantin . She always names the Pixies bassist as her greatest role model. Like her, Misa likes to play barefoot on stage.
