Jaqueline Berndt (* 1963 in Jena ) is a German Japanologist and art scholar . Until 2004 she also worked as a translator . Her research focuses on the visual arts and the aesthetics of comics in modern Japan. Her book Phenomenon Manga , published in 1995, was one of the first more comprehensive, German-language publications on the subject of Manga .

biography

After graduating from high school in 1982, she began studying Japanese studies and aesthetics / art studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where she was a doctoral candidate in the field of aesthetics / art studies from 1987 to 1990. In 1991 she made her Dr. phil. in aesthetics. That same year she started a job as a German - lecturer at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto and moved in 1994 there in the place of an Associate Professor for German as a foreign language . In 1995 she moved to the Sociological Faculty of Ritsumeikan University as Associate Professor of Art Sociology, until she joined Yokohama State University as Associate Professor of Media and Art Studies in 2001 , where she taught until 2009. In the summer semester 2005 she was a DAAD guest lecturer at the University of Leipzig ; In the summer semester of 2008 she was visiting professor of the Bridgestone Foundation at the University of Heidelberg at the Department of East Asian Art History. From 2009 she was professor of comic theory at the Manga Faculty of the Kyōto Seika University and deputy director of the International Manga Research Center, which is located at the Kyōto International Manga Museum . From 2010 to 2014, she also headed the newly established Graduate School of Manga Studies at Kyoto Seika University. In 2017 Berndt moved to Stockholm University , where she holds the chair for Japanese language and culture.

Berndt is often present in the manga and comics scene; She was a member of the jury for the Osamu Tezuka Culture Prize from 2000 to 2002 and 2012 to 2014 , wrote the epilogue to the German first edition of Suehiro Maruo's Der lachende Vampir (2003) and the entries "Comics", "Parody" and "Subculture" for the Metzler Lexikon Ästhetik (2006), as well as several articles for specialist journals such as Strapazin . In 2006 she edited the anthology Reading Manga: Local and Global Perceptions of Japanese Comics together with Steffi Richter . At the Kyōto International Manga Museum she organized the Nicolas Mahler exhibition Aisubeki muri nandai ( Crossing Borders: Mahler's Manga Park , 2014-2015), which was realized with the support of the Krems Caricature Museum and the Austrian Embassy in Japan. For the Japan Foundation , she conceived the touring exhibition Manga Hokusai Manga: Approaching the Master's Compendium from the Perspective of Contemporary Comics , which has been traveling around the world since 2016.
