Strapazin is in Munich founded and today in Zurich sedentary comic - magazine . The quarterly magazine offers a platform primarily to independent artists.

Strapazin, Issue 1, June 1984

history

In 1984, employees of the city newspaper Blatt founded the Strapazin in Munich. According to co-founders Herbert Meiler and Pierre Thomé, one of the role models was Art Spiegelmans magazine RAW . Strapazin was “intended as a podium in a comics scene from the start”. The first number with contributions u. a. von Poussin , Muñoz - Sampayo and Ralf König appeared at the first comic parlor in Erlangen and had the subtitle “Magazine for Hard-Wearing”. After that, there was no one in Munich who could guarantee regular publication of the magazine, which is why the Swiss comic publisher and aficionado David Basler began to publish Strapazin from Zurich. In Zurich, illustrators from the so-called “Zurich School” such as Thomas Ott , Ursula Fürst, Andrea Caprez and Peter Bäder were associated with the magazine. From the 1990s onwards, many artists from the former GDR were there in Germany.

In 2010 the 100th edition appeared, with contributions by Chinese comic artists. At the same time, the Chinese publisher Special Comix published a strapazin special with contributions from many well-known Swiss illustrators and a cover photo by Kati Rickenbach . In the same year, according to David Basler, "almost half of the audience [...] was female."

In 2018, the Strapazin received a cultural award in the field of literature from the city of Zurich: “Founded in 1984 by Swiss and German publishers, it has since shown the wonderful variety of picture-counting formats in large, lush, colorful, wild, and sometimes explosive formats and helped pioneeringly to establish the 'comic' as the 'ninth art'. "

In 2019 the Strapazin celebrated its 35th anniversary with the June issue. The edition is 2000 copies (also as of 2019). The offices in Zurich and Munich still exist today.

concept

The Strapazin prints comics by, in some cases, little known, often avant-garde comic artists. The aesthetic of the Strapazin comics is u. a. shaped by punk and dadaism, the draftsmen have often studied at art schools. Ralf König , ATAK and Thomas Ott published here before their breakthrough.

From number 37 ( L'ASSOCIATION ), the editions were increasingly, later consistently, under a certain topic appearing in the title with a geographical allocation (e.g. Scandinavian comic world , comics from Tel Aviv ) or a common content (e.g. instructions for use , Comics without protagonists ). A number can also be dedicated to outstanding illustrators such as George Herriman (2002). Every time there are "interesting texts on the meta level" for the comics.

Since 2017, the Strapazin has dedicated every June issue to the topic of nonfiction comics. Here z. B. Reportage comics or autobiographical comic reports are presented.

Hundreds of illustrators around the world have published articles in Strapazin, including a. ATAK , Jim Avignon , Mike van Audenhove , Sharmila Banjeree , Arne Bellstorf , Christophe Badoux , Max Baitinger , MS Bastian , Gabrielle Bell , Charles Burns , Chihoi , Vanessa Davis , Julie Doucet , Anke Feuchtenberger , Christoph Fischer , Aisha Franz , Matthias Gnehm , Anna Haifisch , Sascha Hommer , Katz and Goldt , Line Hoven , Ulli Lust , Jean-Christophe Menu , Nicolas Mahler , Mawil , Lika Nüssli , Thomas Ott , Gary Panter , Kai Pfeiffer , Helge Reumann , Anouk Ricard , Kati Rickenbach , Ruppert and Mulot , Joe Sacco , David Sandlin , Karoline Schreiber , Simon Schwartz , Anna Sommer , Caroline Sury , Tardi , Jiro Taniguchi , Till D. Thomas , Craig Thompson , Martin tom Dieck , Lewis Trondheim , Ulf K. , Henning Wagenbreth , Chris Ware and Anja Wicki .

Editing and editors

The Strapazin studio is located in Zurich in an old factory hall, which is the seat of the publishing house management and various freelance illustrators , animators , graphic artists , game designers , translators and authors . The quarterly published Strapazin has no permanent editor-in-chief . The issues are rotated by a total of 20 editors. The editorial and publishing team meets once a year to determine the topics for the following issues. When it comes to implementing them, the makers have practically a free hand. Some of the editors are also part of the Swiss comic book publisher Edition Moderne .

Show

A hallmark of the strain - and one of the main sources of income - are the square ads designed by comic artists, from which advertisers receive 500 stickers with the same motif. To date, more than 6,000 stickers have appeared and "even large companies such as Swatch , Migros or Radio DRS advertise again and again". This financing concept is "internationally famous and often imitated."

effect

The comic magazine has been able to maintain its importance over the years: "There is no other publication in the German-speaking region that is so continuously and judiciously concerned with promoting young talent."

“In the niche culture of artistically advanced comics, the internationally recognized magazine has created networks in an exemplary manner.”

“The currently most influential comic magazine in German-speaking countries. It is a trailblazer for young draftsmen. ”This also manifests itself in 2012 when the Strapazin was included in Art Spiegelman's private museum. “Strapazin has been accompanying, observing, encouraging and reflecting on the comics scene for almost thirty years and, through this tireless commitment, has made a significant contribution to the creation of an independent German-speaking scene. Strapazin also worked beyond the language barriers and is now recognized and admired all over the world ”, and it is“ a seething laboratory for daring experiments, school and style-building for similar projects from South Africa to China ”.

In some comic circles, however, the strapazin is frowned upon, it is considered "avant-garde, illegible, art comics".
