history

Until 1990

The publisher was not a pure comic book publisher at first, but also publishes fiction . The first book of Edition Moderne was the photo book Bilder aus Wohngemeinschaften in 1981 , the entire edition of which was sold of 3,000 copies.

In 1982, Zig Zag Zoug by Poussin and Aloys from Geneva, was the first comic album. Books by Willem , José Antonio Muñoz , Carlos Sampayo , Jacques Tardi and Loustal follow, as well as fiction by Franz Jung , Albert Ehrenstein , Adrien Turel and Ernst Fuhrmann . The scene novel Sauser by Andreas Niedermann was a success in 1987 and the texts Die Walliser and Haute Route helped Maurice Chappaz make a literary comeback in Switzerland.

Also in 1987, the series S'Knüslis by Liz Sutter and Brigitte Fries, first published in Züritipp (also the first album by German-Swiss authors) became the first bestseller with almost 10,000 books sold.

Jacques Tardis 120, rue de la Gare appeared in a two-volume edition in 1988 and contributed significantly to the reputation of the publisher. In 1988, Bortlik retired from operations, but, like Bhend and Bodenmann, remained on the board of directors of the joint-stock company founded in the same year. At the end of the decade there were successes and 27 available titles, but “we couldn't live off it”. Basler held the majority of the shares and "since I've always been responsible for comics and comics were a niche in the market, Edition Moderne turned into a comic publisher".

Until 2000

"In 1991 Edition Moderne also felt the temporary slump in the comic market, but things would soon pick up again." But the publishing business remains a risk. Although a market for comics has emerged in recent years, "artistic comics are still not taken very seriously by the general public," said Basler, who estimated that it had a potential audience of 10,000 readers. 1997: The first Zurich-by-Mike band of Mike van Audenhove appears and becomes a bestseller. Another comic with Zurich humor follows every year, as well as a calendar from 2002. More than 150,000 volumes had already been sold by 2011. Publisher David Basler on the importance of the publications: "I have only been able to pay wages since Zurich by Mike ".

Til today

In 2001, José Muñoz / Carlos Sampayo published Alack Sinner: Trilogy . The media used the 20th anniversary in the following year as an opportunity to honor the achievements of Edition Moderne: "Various awards at home and abroad prove the good nose [...] for innovative and at the same time high-quality comic culture", the small publisher is "the first Address in German-speaking countries for graphically sophisticated picture stories ». The media praise "nobody has done so much for German-Swiss comics" as the "renowned comic book publisher". Another milestone was Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis in 2004 (20,000 copies sold). 10 years Zurich by Mike by Mike van Audenhove will be celebrated in 2006 with a large exhibition in the Zurich city hall. When Edition Moderne celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2007, the publisher was still considered a “first-class address for artistic comics” that “values quality and is guided by personal taste”. In 2008, books and authors from Edition Moderne were awarded three prizes at the Max and Moritz Prize Gala at the Erlangen Comic Salon . 2010 appeared with The fifth variable of Christophe Badoux another bestseller that sold approximately 15,000 times.

Publishing program

Right from the start, the term “modern” should also be part of the publishing program, decidedly by Bhend and Bortlik, who come from the left-wing and alternative book trade, as well as the comic fan Basler. Today's credo, according to David Basler: “The main criterion is that we like it artistically. In addition, the story has to be so good, the drawings have to take a back seat, that afterwards you don't know whether you've read a comic or another book. "

Since 2008 the publisher has been publishing more comic reports; It started with The Photographer by Emmanuel Guibert . In spring 2012 the publishing house published three titles from the reportage segment.

Around twelve new books are currently published annually, and a total of more than 200 volumes have been published to date. One focus of the publishing program is on original editions by German-speaking draftsmen and young draftsmen from the environment of the comic magazine Strapazin, which David Basler co-founded in 1984 .
