Katapult (in the spelling of the publisher: KATAPULT) is a popular science magazine founded in March 2015 that only uses infographics and maps for illustration purposes. The catapult magazine is produced in Greifswald ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ).

concept

The magazine covers topics from various scientific areas such as social, political, economic, legal, linguistic and historical studies, as well as human geography . The specific goal is to make social science findings accessible to a broad public in a creative way. Thus, more complex content of social science research should also be published in popular science. However, this project was not pursued any further.

Katapult is funded by the sale of a quarterly printed edition, license sales of graphics, advertising revenue and donations. The publisher also sells books , posters and card games .

Since the 17th issue, the magazine has been printed exclusively on recycled paper.

history

The idea for the magazine was awarded second place in the UNIQUE ideas competition and the special prize of the UNIQUE + business plan competition of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald in 2014. Since its inception, the magazine has published articles on social science topics and current politics at regular intervals.

The Katapult-Magazin team was supported from March 2015 to February 2016 by the “EXIST” funding program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy .

The rapper Veedel Kaztro produced a soundtrack The picture is dead as magazine music for the 13th issue of the Katapult magazine. It deals with the declining circulation of the picture (newspaper) . In January 2020 he followed the soundtrack for the 16th edition of the song Papier Planet .

Plagiarism cases

Southgerman newspaper

On February 16, 2020, Katapult editor-in-chief Benjamin Fredrich accused the Süddeutsche Zeitung of copying graphics from Katapult and publishing them with a short delay in the statistics section "Bottom Line". The editor in charge of the Süddeutsche Zeitung admitted to taking over the works, according to Fredrich. After the allegations were published, the Süddeutsche Zeitung discontinued the entire section.

Hoffmann and Campe

In March 2020, the Hamburg publisher Hoffmann und Campe published the book "Good Cards: Germany as You Have Never Seen It". Benjamin Fredrich accused the publisher and its authors, Tin Fischer and Mario Mensch, of having copied the entire concept, layout and also individual cards for this book from Katapult. Tin Fischer felt the subsequent anger of the Katapult readership was a shit storm and rejected the allegations. Hoffmann and Campe also rejected all allegations.

The media lawyer Tilman Winterling assessed the plagiarism allegations regarding the illegal appropriation of the concept in an interview with Deutschlandfunk as “probably not justiciable”. Because such is "not properly protectable". Here you have to compare individual cards with each other in order to check the copyright. From the point of view of competition law, however, there could be an imitation.
