Marcel Helbig

Marcel Helbig (* 1980 in Erfurt ) is a German social scientist and university professor .

Life

Helbig studied social sciences and communication science at the University of Erfurt . There he graduated in 2004 with a bachelor's degree . He then moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he completed a master's degree in social sciences until 2007 . He then went to the Berlin Science Center for Social Research as a research assistant . In 2012 he was with the dissertation Are girls better ?: the changing gender educational success in Germany in the field of sociology at the Humboldt University of Berlin to Dr. phil. PhD .

In October 2015, Helbig accepted an appointment as professor at the Chair of Education and Social Inequality at the University of Erfurt. This chair exists as a cooperation between the University of Erfurt and the Berlin Science Center for Social Research.

Helbig deals with issues of social inequality in the education system, not only taking into account social origin, but also other aspects such as religion, gender and family constellations. In 2018, he and Stefanie Jähnen published a study on the growing socio-spatial divide in German cities. This attracted national attention.
