Anna Sommer (born May 13, 1968 in Aarau ) is a Swiss comic artist and illustrator . She lives and works in Zurich .

biography

Sommer completed the basic course at the Zurich University of the Arts and an apprenticeship as a graphic designer. At the same time, she always enjoyed drawing and a lot; As a child, it was “women who preferred to wear high heels”, but Sommer came to drawing comics almost by chance: “As a child, of course, I read Tintin and Wilhelm Busch, who were obviously important for my comic education. But then I didn't read any comics for years ” .

In 1996, Sommer's first comic book, Damen Dramen, appeared . The volume in A5 format tells without words of different women, "playful and at the same time full of seriousness, innocent, but absolutely free of scruples," writes Milena Moser in the blurb. The success of her wildly weird, sometimes frivolous stories with and about women made it possible for Sommer to move from a permanent graphic designer to a freelance comic artist and illustrator.

The second book, Honigmond (1998), “a bitterly angry story in collage technique about the excesses on a wedding night” , is also quickly sold out.

As a result, Sommer established herself both as an illustrator and as a comic artist, and in 2007 the Fumetto comic festival devoted a solo show to her, because “she is one of the cleverest storytellers on the progressive comic scene” .

In 2007 the autobiographical book The Truth and Other Inventions was published . In this summer no name changed, all characters appearing are called as in reality. “Anna Sommer talks freely and openly about the liberal experiences and discoveries of her childhood and puberty, about first boyfriends, kisses, gentle flirting with homoeroticism and childlike trying out co-sleeping.” She says herself “Poking around in the past shows me how vague ours are Memories are. " The book is " extremely amusing " , judge some media professionals, others praise " The ease with which the drawings are made is what makes the book a great pleasure to look at " and note " the high quality of their stories is not the last thing that touches from the subtle breaks that run through everything. ” With her black and white drawings , she drew “ a little comic pearl ” .

In 2010 the commissioned work Julie is back! released. The story of a girl suffering from leukemia is intended to help parents and siblings to make the stress of this disease more bearable. In 2003 she had already published a children's book on brain cancer with Eugen und der Nache Wicht , which is aimed at affected children and their families as well as teachers, friends, carers and doctors. Then she worked on a picture book for the blind.

Since the 1990s, Sommer has also been working regularly as an illustrator for NZZ Folio , Die Zeit , Liberation , WoZ and Strapazin, among others .

Her life partner is the comic artist Noyau.

She is the guest of honor at the comic festival BD-FIL 2017 in Lausanne , Festival international de bande dessinée de Lausanne and created the festival poster.

style

“The motivation for drawing was always storytelling. I also always told stories in individual pictures, ” said Sommer about her work. To do this, she uses different techniques: At first she mainly drew black-and-white drawings in ink, which "are better suited for quick narration" ; Today she designs paper cuts with a Japanese knife and spray glue as “trendy, striking collages” without speech bubbles, and she also creates drypoint etchings. "The atypical visual language far from comic templates is one of the reasons why Anna Sommer also appeals to readers who are usually not interested in comics" .

Sommer himself particularly appreciates "the intimate comics by Julie Doucet, Chester Brown or David B" as well as among the writing authors Agota Kristof , Emmanuel Bove and works like Effi Briest or Madame Bovary .
