Nine Antico
Nine Antico (* 1981 in Aubervilliers ) is a French cartoonist and illustrator. The daughter of a foreman and a secretary lives in Paris .
biography
When Nine Antico was not accepted into any art school in 2004, she decided to publish her work in her own fanzine Rock This Way. She never dreamed of drawing comics: “As a child, I always enjoyed drawing. But I read few comics and only the classics like Tintin and Lucky Luke. I wanted to be an illustrator for children's books. ”She first got to know contemporary comics as an assistant at the comic publisher Editions Cornélius.
In 2008, Le Goût du paradis appears; her first work caused a sensation. It is a “sparkling biography” of a white adolescent in the Seine-Saint-Denis department , who is known for its social problems. The work is “99% autobiographical,” according to Antico, avowed fan of the films by Jacques Rozier and Robert Mulligan and the music of Lou Reed and The Cure .
Antico's second book, Coney Island Baby, will be published in France in 2010 and in Switzerland in 2011. Based on the biographies of the pin-up girl Bettie Page and the porn actress Linda Lovelace, it addresses moral and aesthetic developments in society such as sexual liberation. “Even today women are judged on how we play out our charms. The mother and the whore, this is still very much present. I don't have a feminist discourse, but I think it's still difficult for women to maintain poise and endure this choice over time. ”At the same time, the comic shows the technological evolution from photography in the 50s to pornography in the 70s and one Aspect of the American Dream. “I wanted to show a career in seduction, which is always complicated for a woman, especially for those who do it for a living. I found the biographies of the two women complement each other well. Linda was rather passive and let herself be carried through life. Bettie Page was much more reflective. ”The graphic novel is praised by the French media:“ She did the feat of a dense work ”and offers“ a great tribute to these rebellious women who were sacrificed on the altar of the American dream ”; Coney Island Baby is a "powerful reflection on the conditions of being a woman yesterday and today".
Antico publishes simultaneously in the magazines Discobabel, Minimum Rock'n'Roll, Nova Magazine, Trax, Rendez-Vous Magazine, Jhon Magazine, NeverEnding, Double and Muteen. She has also drawn illustrations for the Belgian fashion designer Céline Collard (autumn / winter 2007).
In 2011 she spent two months in Los Angeles doing research on rock music of the 1960s for her next work.
style
The media write, she draws “rounded and sober, sometimes suggestive”, her “drawing is precise, incredibly fine, reminiscent of drawings for young girls in the 1970s and the Italian draftsman Leone Frollo , even if more airy and lush ”. . It is a wonderful line, "which is pleasantly backward-looking but still independent and modern".
