Pierrot (studio)
KK Pierrot ( Japanese 株式会社 ぴ え ろ , Kabushiki-gaisha Piero , English Pierrot Co., Ltd. ) is a Japanese production studio for anime .
The company's name is derived from the French word for clown .
history
In April 1977 the animators and directors Yūji Nunokawa ( 布川 郁 司 ), Mitsuo Uenashi ( 上 梨 満 雄 ) and Hiroko Tokita ( と き た ひ ろ こ ) formed a common group. In May 1979 it became the animation company KK Studio Pierrot ( 株式会社 ス タ ジ オ ぴ え ろ , kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Piero ) in Mitaka near Tokyo .
Nunokawa and Uenashi, who worked for Tatsunoko Production , among others, recruited other directors from there - such as Hisayuki Toriumi ( 鳥 海 永 行 ), Masami Annō ( 案 納 正 美 ), Motosuke Takashi ( 高橋 資 祐 ) and Mamoru Oshii . The first animated work was the television series The Wonderful Journey of Little Nils Holgersson with the Wild Geese from 1980 to 1981 , which was produced by Gakken. Urusei Yatsura (1981–1986) followed in 1981 with Kitty Film as producer. For Gakken they then animated the television series Maicching Machiko-sensei (1981-1983) and Ms. Pfeffertopf (1983-1984). These were still commissioned productions, followed in 1983/84 with the television series Mahō no Tenshi Creamy Mami, the studio's first in-house production. This was a great success, so that the series on the one hand resulted in several OVAs as sequels, but the studio also produced other Magical Girl series: Mahō no Yōsei Perusha (1984–1985), Mahō no Star Magical Emi (1985– 1986) and Mahō no Idol Pastel Yūmi (1986). For the 20th anniversary of the studio, Mahō no Stage Fancy Lala was to appear in 1998, following on from this series . Also in 1983, Urusei Yatsura: Only You , the studio's first film, was released and Dallos was the first ever OVA to appear. Mamoru Oshii was the director of both.
In May 1985 the subsidiary KK Pierrot Project ( 株式会社 ぴ え ろ プ ロ ジ ェ ク ト , Kabushiki-gaisha Piero Purojekuto ) was founded to manage the copyrights and to market the productions .
From 1992 to 1995, the studio had another great success with the film adaptation of the Shōnen Jump title Yū Yū Hakusho , which was followed by further long-running adaptations from this Shōnen manga magazine with Naruto (since 2002) and Bleach (since 2004) .
In 2002 the KK Pierrot Project and the KK Studio Pierrot merged to form the joint company KK Pierrot . Since 2004 this has been based on the previous company name under the Studio Pierrot brand ( studio ぴ え ろ ).
