The mysterious cities of gold ( Japanese 太陽 の 子 エ ス テ バ ン , Taiyō no Ko Esuteban , literally: "Child of the Sun Esteban"; French. Les Mystérieuses Cités d'or ) is a French - Japanese cartoon series . It is based on the book The King's Fifth by the American writer Scott O'Dell .

As an infant, the orphan boy Esteban was rescued from a sinking shipwreck in the Pacific by the navigator Mendoza . He always carries a golden amulet with him, part of which Mendoza took during his rescue. In 1532 the twelve-year-old Esteban met the adventurer Mendoza in Barcelona ( Spain ), who told him about the mysterious cities of the Inca gold . Esteban, who is said to have the ability to call the sun, hopes to find his father in the cities of gold. Together with Mendoza and its two journeymen, Sancho and Pedro, he goes in search of the cities.

In doing so, they encounter Zia and Tao. While Zia is a twelve-year-old Inca girl who was kidnapped by the Spaniards as a small child and who, like Esteban, wears a gold amulet, Tao is a descendant of the people of Mu who grew up alone on a small Galapagos island. With the knowledge of his ancestors, Tao often helps Esteban and Zia in tricky situations.

Production and publication

The series goes back to the French producers Jean Chalopin and Bernard Deyriès , who both worked together with a Japanese staff on Ulysses 31 for reasons of cost . The story is loosely based on the book The King's Fifth by American writer Scott O'Dell . Chalopin's film studio DIC Audiovisuel therefore entered into a cooperation with the Japanese broadcaster NHK . The animation was carried out by Studio Pierrot with Hisayuki Toriumi as the overall director. Eiko Toriumi, Bernard Deyries, Kyosuke Mikuriya and Mizuho Nishikubo also directed. The scripts were written by Michiru Umadori, Michiru Kaneko and Soji Yoshikawa. The music of the Japanese version comes from Nobuyoshi Koshibe and the French, on which the German version is based, from Haim Saban and Shuki Levy .

The French first broadcast took place on May 13, 1982 on RTL Télévision . From June 29, 1982 to June 7, 1983, the Japanese first broadcast of the 39 episodes took place on the television station NHK . The Japanese version contains a short documentary segment at the end of each episode in which an aspect of the cultures and peoples of South and Central America or their discovery and conquest by the Spaniards is explained. These segments are missing in most of the international versions.

The mysterious cities of gold was broadcast in German for the first time in 1988 on GDR television (later DFF). It was repeated in 1991 in the DFF country chain (1991), in the MDR (1993 and 1995) and in the ORB (1994). Anime Virtual released the series from November 2002 to June 2003 in Germany on six DVDs. In 2005 a box with all six DVDs was released. Since July 4, 2011, the series has been broadcast again on Anixe and Das Vierte . Internationally, the series was broadcast on British, American, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese and Swedish television, among others. In France, after the first broadcast on Antenne 2 in 1983, various repetitions took place on different channels.

French continuation

In 2008 plans were announced to produce a 26-part sequel. This animated series by the French studio Blue Spirit called Les Mystérieuses Cités d'or Saison 2 was broadcast on the Belgian channel La Trois from November 17, 2012, and on TF1 from December 9, 2012 in France . The German premiere has been on pay TV on Nicktoons Germany since December 14, 2013 . The sequel was broadcast on German free TV from February 3, 2014 on Nickelodeon . The broadcast on Nicktoons and Nickelodeon (Germany) was temporarily canceled at episode 16. According to Nickelodeon on Facebook, it was planned to re-broadcast the series in the summer of 2014, but the broadcast there too ended prematurely. The series will continue to be broadcast on Nickelodeon Switzerland . The episodes can also be viewed via stream on nick.ch.

A sequel as the third season was produced by blue spirit productions from 2013 in the Angoulême studios. Another 26 episodes with a running time of 26 minutes each were planned. In 2014, post-production was completed and animation production started. The episodes were finally broadcast for the first time in France from October 12 to 28, 2016.

The series was released on DVD in France, the first season on TFOU Vidéo and the second on Universal Pictures France. On June 26, 2015, Polyband only released episodes 1 to 7 and 8 to 13 on the German market as DVDs. In early 2016, due to the low sales figures, Polyband decided not to produce the remaining episodes on DVD.

reception

The Anime Encyclopedia describes the series from the 1980s as "recommendable", despite some concessions to the children's program, such as the "annoying parrot" and the silly robbers. The story offers an exciting mix of ancient technologies, lost cities, warring tribes and huge machines in a typical adventure anime manner and always takes unexpected turns. The indigenous peoples of South America are portrayed in a positive and compassionate way that is rare for cartoon series and at the same time an authentic picture of the optimistic mood of the time of conquest is shown. The television broadcast in Japan as well as in France was a great success.

In its criticism, the German magazine Animania praised the high quality of the animation for the time, as well as that of the German dubbing, which would correspond to "the high standard of a classic of German television". The manga scene , like the Anime Encyclopedia , compares the plot with the later series The Power of the Magic Stone , which similarly begins as an adventure in the past and then develops into science fiction. Influences from Erich von Däniken are also seen in the fantastic elements of the story. It is regrettable that the “exciting adventure story” in Germany, in contrast to Japan and France, received little attention. The German DVD edition of the anime series from the 1980s is praised in the Funime for the elaborate post-processing that makes the colors, facets and details of the old series really noticeable. In terms of sound and the language versions available, wishes remained unfulfilled, but due to the extra material and the many episodes per DVD, the release was still a worthwhile new version of an "almost legendary series".
