KK Kitty Film ( Japanese 株式会社 キ テ ィ ・ フ ィ ル ム , Kabushiki kaisha Kiti Firumu , English Kitty Film Co. Ltd ) is an anime production company and was founded in 1972 in Japan .
The company also ran a record label called Kitty Records , from 1995 together with Mercury Records Entertainment as Kitty MME and now part of Japanese Universal Music .
history
The company was first founded in 1972 as Kitty Music Corporation by Hidenori Taga . It was a subsidiary of Polydor and Universal Music which produced TV soundtracks. The first was for the film Hajimete no Tabi and was released in 1972. In 1979 the company began to branch off into live action with the films for Kagirinaku Tōmei ni Chikai Blue and The Roses of Versailles (Kitty had no connection with the anime version of the latter which was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha ). From 1981 Kitty Enterprises produced her first anime Urusei Yatsura based on the manga of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi , with which her greatest success came. On March 24, 1982, Kitty Film was founded. In and outside of Japan, Kitty Film is known for having animated most of Rumiko Takahashi's manga series, including Maison Ikkoku and Ranma ½ . Rumiko Takahashi attended the same manga school as Shigekazu Ochiai , the planner of most of Kitty's anime productions. Kitty Film also founded the official Urusei Yatsura fan club in 1982, which was later renamed Kitty Animation Circle in 1986 .
Despite her success as a producer, Kitty's works were animated by several independent anime studios. The first half of the Urusei Yatsura TV series and the first two films were animated by Studio Pierrot . Studio Deen animated the rest of the series with the exception of the OVAs, as well as the third and fourth films. Maison Ikkoku and Ranma ½ was completely animated by Studio Deen. Madhouse animated the last Urusei Yatsura film as well as some later OVA's. The animation of Ginga Eiyū Densetsu and Yawara! was completely animated by Madhouse .
The company had financial problems right from the start, which were especially felt when the television series Ranma ended in 1992. Hidenori Taga helped fund Kitty's film division by embezzling money from the music industry and was forced to resign due to an unknown scandal that year while Shigekazu Ochiai moved to Pao House Studios (he died in 1999). After Ranma ½ Super: Futari no Akane: "Ranma, Atashi o Mite!" ( ら ん ま ½SUPER 二人 の あ か ね 『乱馬 、 私 を 見 て!』 ) was published in 1996, Rumiko Takahashi no longer wanted to work with Kitty.
Kitty has been a talent agency since 2007 and has sold most of the rights to her anime hits. One of the artists under contract is the Japanese women's band SCANDAL . In 2010, Kitty Film produced another animated film Loups = Garous ( ル ー = ガ ル ー ) with the Production IG studio .
