Ginga Eiyū Densetsu ( Japanese 銀河 英雄 伝 説 ), also known under the English title Legend of (the) Galactic Heroes or the German, but grammatically and stylistically incorrect subtitle Heldensagen vom Kosmosinsel , is a series of several science fiction novels by Yoshiki Tanaka , written between 1982 and 1987. There is both an anime film (1988 to 1997), a manga and several OVAs . In 2016, the first three volumes of the series were published in English by Viz Media ; the anime was licensed for the US market by Sentai Filmworks in 2015 . In Japan the title is also abbreviated to gin'eiden ( 銀 英 伝 ).

action

The story takes place in our Milky Way in the 35th century . Mankind developed interstellar spaceflight and made a large part of the planets in the galaxy habitable through terraforming . For 150 years there has been war in the galaxy between the monarchical , Prussian- based Galactic Empire and the democratic alliance of the free planets .

The rise of the young Reinhard von Lohengramm , who comes from an impoverished noble family, begins within the Galactic Empire . He is inspired by the desire to free his sister Annerose, who has to serve as a concubine for the ruling emperor. In addition, his desire crystallizes in the course of the series to overthrow the corrupt, ruling Goldenbaum dynasty and to unite the galaxy under his rule and that of the Galactic Empire.

At the same time, the ascent of Yang Wenli begins in the army of the Alliance of Free Planets . Originally aspiring to be a historian, he only joined the military because he needed money to pay for his studies. As his military genius was quickly recognized, he quickly rose to the rank of admiral and became the arch rival of Reinhard von Lohengramm, although both of them also had deep respect for one another.

In addition to the two great galactic powers, there are two other powers: the neutral planetary state Phezzan Dominion , which trades with both warring parties, and the cult of terraism , which demands that all people withdraw from the galaxy and return to earth.

In addition to the two main characters, the series also deals with a large number of secondary characters who come from all different social classes and include admirals, nobles and high politicians as well as normal farmers and soldiers, as well as the power politics between the individual people. The plot itself is described from the perspective of a historian.

Manga

Anime

OVA

From 1988 to 1997, a 110-part series based on the novels was shot in four seasons. The director was Noboru Ishiguro , the series was produced by Mitaka Studio of Kitty Film . Matsuri Okuda and Masayuki Kato were responsible for the design, Studio Nue was involved in the implementation. So that the viewer does not lose track of the many figures, the names are displayed under all new figures or figures that reappear after a while. The first two episodes were cut together as a film and initially shown in the cinema - together with the film Ultimate Teacher . The other episodes of Ginga Eiyū Densetsu were then released on video, so that the series is considered OVA . However, sales were primarily through fan subscriptions and not through stores, which helped finance the decade-long production. Only then did other video distribution channels follow, and finally several broadcasts on Japanese television.

In addition to the 110-part series, three films and two other series were also produced. In 1988, the first film Ginga Eiyū Densetsu: Waga yuku wa Hoshi no Taikai ( 銀河 英雄 伝 説 わ が 征 く は 星 の 大海 ) was released, which is about the first knowledgeable encounter between Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wenglis and is therefore a prequel to the series. Like the series, the 60-minute film was produced by Studio Kitty Film, also directed by Noboru Ishiguro.

From 1998 to 2000, Ginga Eiyū Densetsu Gaiden followed with two seasons of 52 episodes as a film adaptation of volume three and four of the side stories ( gaiden ), which Yoshiki wrote from 1984 to 1989. Again directed by Noboru Ishiguro.

In 2015 Sentai Filmworks licensed the series for the US market.

cinemamovies

In 1992, the 60-minute film Ginga Eiyū Densetsu Gaiden: Ōgon no Tsubasa ( 銀河 英雄 伝 説 外 伝 黄金 の 翼 ) was released. The film is a prequel to the series and is about how Reinhard von Lohengramm got into the military together with his friend Siegfried Kircheis. The film is an adaptation of one of the short stories Yoshiki wrote between 1984 and 1989. In the opening credits, unlike all other implementations, the correctly translated German title Die Legende der Sternhelden is shown.

In 1993 another film was produced for the series with the title Ginga Eiyū Densetsu Gaiden / Arata naru Tatakai no Overture ( 銀河 英雄 伝 説 外 伝 / 新 た な る 戦 い の序曲オ ー ヴ ァ チ ュ ア). The 90-minute film is a remake of the first two episodes of the series and was again produced by Kitty Film. Keizō Shimizu and Ken'ichi Maeda were responsible for the direction .

Television series

In 2018, Studio Production IG produced a remake under the title Ginga Eiyū Densetsu: The New Thesis ( 銀河 英雄 伝 説 The New Thesis), directed by Shunsuke Suwabe, assisted by Yūjirō Moriyama. A second season called Seiran ( 星 乱 'Star Rising' ) was released in 2019.

The series was published in German under the title Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis of Universum Anime .

reception

In 1988 the novel was awarded the Seiun Prize in the Best Novel of the Year category. In the Anime Encyclopedia , the novel series is described as Yoshiki Tanaka's magnum opus , clearly superior to his other books such as Appleland Stories and Heroic Legends of Arslan . The “tragic epic” shows the fate of two heroes who could be best friends if they weren't at war. Both sides would be shown empathetically with their strengths and weaknesses. The anime series praised the “brilliant” execution of the animation, which was implemented in the style of a disaster film and managed with thankfully few technical gadgets, as well as the “masterfully written script”. The complex plot makes Dune appear in comparison like The Cat in the Hat .
