Cat in the Hat ( The Cat in the Hat ) is an American adventure comedy from the year 2003 . Directed by Bo Welch , the script was written by Alec Berg , David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer based on the children's book Der Kater mit Hut (original title: The Cat in the Hat ) by Dr. Seuss .

action

Single real estate agent Joan Walden has two children, Sally and Conrad. She meets with her neighbor, Lawrence Quinn, whom she plans to marry. Quinn plans to send his future stepson to military school.

The children sit alone in their house and are bored. You are visited by a talking tomcat that is the size of a human. The tomcat ignores the children's fish trying to address him and presents a contract that the children enjoy.

Together with the cat and his helpers Ding 1 and Ding 2 the children experience numerous adventures in a fantasy world. They ravage their home and expose Quinn as having weak character. In the end, the house rules are restored before Joan returns.

Joan realizes Quinn is not who she thought he was and turns him away.

The full story is told by an anonymous narrator who, as you find out in the end, is the cat.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on November 21, 2003 that the production design of the film was good, but the film was disappointing. He is another overwrought failure (" overwrought clunker ") like The Grinch .

Cinema magazine wrote that the film had experienced “ immoderate malice from almost all American film critics ”, but that the children's book adaptation was “ much, much better than its miserable reputation ”.
