Cheers (Drink to That) is a song of from Barbados coming R & B - singer Rihanna . On July 24, 2011, Rihanna announced via her Twitter account that the song would be the sixth single from her fifth studio album, Loud . On August 2, 2011, the song was played on the radio in the United States for the first time . "Cheers (Drink to That)" is also on the setlist of the Loud Tour (2011).

"Cheers (Drink to That)" was originally supposed to be Loud's lead single instead of " Only Girl (In the World) " , as the title Cheers became known before the album was released. In the online survey of Loud's fourth single , in which “ California King Bed ” and “ Man Down ” made the running, “Fading” and “Cheers (Drink to That)” were also available. Now Rihanna has announced on her Twitter page by writing to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton that his favorite Loud song , "Cheers (Drink to That)", will be the next single.

"Cheers (Drink to That)" was written by Andrew Harr, Jermaine Jackson, Stacey Barthe, LP , Corey Gibson, Chris Ivery, and Rihanna and produced by The Runners. The song contains a sample of Avril Lavigne's song "I'm with You" , which was written by Avril Lavigne, Scott Spock, Lauren Christy and Graham Edwards and appeared on the album Let Go (2002). The song belongs to the pop-rock genre .

Critical reception

Jon Pareles of The New York Times comments on the song: “The song is an arena anthem and just perfect for rocking out in front of the mirror.” Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly explains : “Avril Lavigne's sample is a really dirty one Party anthem. ”Ryan Dombal of Pitchfork says,“ Life's too short to be sittin 'around miserable, ”Rihanna sings with a shrug on the nightly hit“ Cheers (Drink to That). ”" BBC Music's Mark Savage described the song as "funky" for a night in the city, which Rihanna dedicates to "all the semi-alcoholics in the world". Robert Copsey of Digital Spy also praised the use of the Lavigne sample, calling the song "incredibly memorable," and predicted the song could be a hit in clubs and bars because of its lyrics references to alcohol and going out in the middle at night on the weekend.

Later, the song reached number 11 and became Rihanna's 21st Top 20 hit. The song peaked at number seven in the week of September 29, 2011, becoming Rihanna's 16th top 10 hit. The song also debuted at number 35 on US pop songs and reached number eleven. The song also reached number six in the Australian ARIA charts and number five in the New Zealand singles charts. In both countries, “Cheers” was awarded gold and platinum respectively. In the Canadian Hot 100 , the song reached number 37. In the week of September 3, 2011, the song debuted at number 67 on the British singles chart, but could later reach number 15. The song reached number four in the British R&B charts. In Switzerland , the song was ranked 66th for one week in the week of September 28, 2011.

During the concert in Bridgetown , Barbados on August 5, 2011, as part of her Loud Tour , Rihanna announced that “Cheers (Drink an That)” will be recorded for the music video during the show. Thus, the music video is Rihanna's first live music video. On August 22, 2011, Rihanna announced via Twitter that the video would premiere on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 on iTunes . However, it was later announced that it would not be released until two days later. On August 26th 2011 it was finally released on iTunes and on Rihanna's VEVO channel. For this purpose, a 16-second long teaser was published in advance, in which you can see backstage material of a concert and cheering fans.

The music video for "Cheers (Drink an That)" opens with Rihanna's fans cheering and shouting Rihanna's name at their concert. Then Rihanna goes into her dressing room and prepares her make-up and stage outfit. As fireworks explode in the sky, scenes of Rihanna can be seen driving through her hometown and sitting in a bar with a drink. As the song starts playing, Rihanna is seen in a variety of different outfits from different parts of the concert. At the same time, clips from the audience dancing and singing are also shown. In other scenes, Rihanna is in possession of a handheld camera and films the people and the goings-on backstage and during rehearsals. Avril Lavigne , who has a short appearance in the video, can be seen in a scene in which she lifts her glass into the camera and then skates on a skateboard at the edge of a swimming pool and finally falls into it in full gear. Jay-Z , Kanye West and Cee Lo Green can also be seen in various clips of the video, while the former two were secialguests on Rihanna's tour , the latter was part of the opening act for the North American leg of the tour. Scenes of Rihanna on a private jet, avoiding paparazzi and attending Barbados Kadooment Day are also included in the video. Other scenes show Rihanna taking photos of herself with her mother and grandmother, swimming, relaxing, partying with her brother, and spending time with her friends and family. The video ends with Rihanna on a boat. She shouts: "Rihanna Navy!", Which refers to her fan base that calls itself that.

Critical reception

After its release, the video received widespread critical acclaim. The Daily Mail's Iona Kirby praised the docu-style of the video, which gives fans an opportunity to see insight into Rihanna's life. A Rap-Up reviewer praised the video and commented: "real blast in a glass!" According to PopDash's Giovanna Falcone, “Rihanna shows herself fooling around with friends and family, on stage and how she loves life. You can't change it, you just have to smile ”. PopCrush's Amy Sciarretto explained that the video was very different from Rihanna's previous videos, such as Man Down . She also commented that this video was Rihanna's "most open and loose" video. Idolator's Robbie Daw noted that the music video looks like "one big, drunk night." A reviewer for Rolling Stone magazine commented that the video "shows Rihanna in a suitably festive mood ... showing a lot of footage of her partying backstage with friends and celebrities." Sarah Maloy of Billboard magazine commented, "There are no special effects, actions - and no chance for lawsuits," referring to one of Rihanna's previous music videos, " S&M, " which was charged with two lawsuits. Maloy also pointed out that the video presents Rihanna's ordinary life as it is.

Brad Wete of Entertainment Weekly commented, “It's party time folks! And that's exactly what the video makes visible ”. Regarding the short appearances of several celebrities and Rihanna's colleagues, Leah Collins from The Vancouver Sun commented: “[...] Rihanna shows that she has more celebrity friends than hairstyles (and that says something, because she manages approx . to wear a different hairstyle every 5 seconds) ”. William Goodman of Spin Magazine wrote: “Barbados pop queen Rihanna leads a comfortable life. But in all honesty, she's just a hometown party girl and her new video for "Cheers (Drink an That)" [...] proves it. "On the lifting of glasses in the video, Rebeca Ford of The Hollywood Reporter commented," The singer is also evident that she often raises a glass for her audience. She probably thanks them for their support in their own personal development. "Cheers.""
