music

Musical style and singing

Rihanna at the Concert for Valor in 2014.

Rihanna mixes R&B music with elements from Caribbean music such as reggae and dancehall . Her style "fuses Caribbean rhythms with common elements of dance-pop ".

Her debut album included productions by the explorers Rihannas, Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, such as the debut single Pon de Replay, which was influenced by traditional reggae and dance pop . The same styles of music can be found on her second music album. Rihanna then got into pop and R&B music. The music production team Stargate and Ne-Yo produced, among other things, their hit Unfaithful . With songs like Kisses Don't Lie and Shut Up and Drive , the style of music was more rock-oriented. The third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, is more related to dance pop than to the dancehall and reggae style of the previous albums.

Most of their love ballads, produced by Stargate and written by Ne-Yo, contain a pop-oriented sound with R&B influences with gently pounded acoustic guitars. Some of their faster dance-pop songs were produced by Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers, Christopher Stewart and JR Rotem. Rihanna's pieces also include samples from other songs like Soft Cell Tainted Love in SOS, New Order's Blue Monday in Shut Up and Drive and a native of the 1970 piece Soul Makossa of Manu Dibango in Do not Stop the Music , the part of the chorus of Michael Jackson Wanna Be Startin 'somethin' contains.

Influences and reception

Rihanna names Mariah Carey , Madonna and Janet Jackson as her role models. Beyoncé also has a strong influence on Rihanna's music. According to Rihanna, she started singing after seeing Beyoncé performing with Destiny's Child . Other musical influences come from Bob Marley (Rihanna built a shrine for him in her Los Angeles home ), Alicia Keys , Whitney Houston , Destiny's Child, Celine Dion , Brandy and Gwen Stefani .

Jon Bream of the Star Tribune comments: "In the tradition of Madonna and Janet Jackson, Rihanna became the video beast of the 2000s ... Rihanna perfected the pout, long legs and style-defining hairstyles." George Epaminondas of InStyle magazine finds Rihanna's music videos " cinematic ", because of their" mixture of island rhythms and swinging pop and ... mischievous sensuality. "

In Barbados , a street was named after her 2017th

public perception

Rihanna at the Met Gala (2017).

At the beginning of her career, Rihanna had the image of a reggae musician. In addition, she was often compared with Beyoncé Knowles , which Rihanna herself found negative, as she was often referred to as a "copy" of Knowles. According to media reports at the time, the appearance and musical style of the two artists were particularly similar.

The public image of the artist changed with the release of her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad . This change of image was reflected in her music as well as in her public appearance. From now on, the singer's style of dress became more daring. 2009 took Tracey Lomrantz, author at Glamor , Rihanna's style as follows: "If style risks would be measured in miles, Rihanna would have circled the globe a thousand times." Because of their style of dress she landed in 2008 on the list of 10 Best Dressed Stars of 2008 by People magazine . In October 2011, she was voted by readers of US magazine Esquire for Sexiest Woman Alive selected. In August 2010, a wax figure of Rihanna was released at Madame Tussauds in Washington, DC.

Successes and Records

Rihanna set several records in the German single charts and in the Billboard Hot 100 . In November 2008, eight songs from her album Good Girl Gone Bad were in the Hot 100 charts at the same time, something that only Shania Twain had previously achieved. From June 8, 2007 to May 15, 2009 she was represented in the German single charts for 100 weeks uninterruptedly, longer than any other artist. This puts her in third place behind Michael Jackson and the Backstreet Boys . In the British charts, she holds the record with Umbrella with the longest number one placement. In addition, she is the only artist with a total of eight number one placements in Billboard Pop Songs in the United States . In 2010 Rihanna was able to place herself in the Guinness Book of Records with the success of her single Umbrella as "Best-Selling Download Female Artist in the UK".
