A Girl like Me (. En for: "A girl like me" ) is the second studio album by R & B - singer Rihanna . It was released in April 2006.

useful information

Less than a month after Rihanna's debut album Music of the Sun was released , work on the successor began, so that the promotion for the first album and the studio recordings for A Girl like Me took place in parallel for a few months. Much of the title was written by the two producers Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, who were already responsible for the debut album. Other songs came from a. by J. R. Rotem and the Norwegian producer duo Stargate .

For Rihanna, A Girl Like Me is a very personal album, she sings about things she's been through and about experiences a girl like her might have had. For the artist, music is an opportunity to express oneself. She processed influences from the 1980s, from rock and reggae as well as from R&B .

criticism

The album received mixed reviews. Billboard magazine was surprised by the artist's refreshing versatility on the album and, in addition to the hit single SOS , especially emphasized the hit potential of Break It Off , a collaboration with Sean Paul . The online magazine laut.de described the album as a quick shot, which "but it backfires thoroughly". In addition to the hit single SOS , the "sad rest ... with happy party music have about as much in common as Rihanna with Gloria Jones". The Rolling Stone notes that although there were fewer “fillers” on the album compared to the debut album, the light-footed dancehall could not keep the SOS standard throughout. The magazine Spin writes that the album would have been better called "A Girl like Ashanti " and says that "Dem Haters" in particular sounds very immature.

success

A Girl like Me was much more commercially successful than its predecessor. In the USA and Great Britain the album reached number 5 in the charts, in Germany it came to position 13. A total of over 3.3 million copies were sold worldwide.

Singles

The first single from this album, SOS , which hit the US singles charts in February and the European singles charts in April and was Rihanna's most commercially successful song to date, is based on a sample of Soft Cell's 1981 hit Tainted Love . This song was the promotional melody for the sporting goods manufacturer Nike and for the department store chain JC Penney .

Other singles from A Girl like Me include the ballad Unfaithful and We Ride , the singer's first single to not hit the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States . On 1 December 2006, the song entered the German single charts, on # 45 - Rihanna's been first charting outside the top 30. The fourth and final single from her second album was in the US and Canada, together with Sean Paul recorded The song Break It Off was released, which reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US .
