Kikla ( Arabic ككلة) is a Libyan city ​​with about 10,000 inhabitants.

location

Kikla is located in the Nafusa Mountains and belongs to the al-Jabal al-Gharbi municipality . The city is located approximately 150 kilometers southwest of the capital Tripoli , east of the regional center Yafran and west of the economic center Gharyan .

History

In his travelogue about North Africa from 1849 to 1855 Heinrich Barth mentioned Kikla as the namesake for a district. The residents of the district took part in the resistance against the Turks, the villages suffered a lot and many homes were destroyed. In 1917, the British Navy's Libya Manual noted that Kikla was a group of brick-built villages and the capital of an administrative district with a total population of 8,000.

Battles 2011

Kikla was the scene of clashes between the government and insurgents several times during the civil war in Libya . On June 14, 2011, Kikla was captured by the insurgents. The war left 60 dead.

Battles 2014

In the autumn of 2014, there were again fierce fighting for control of the city. The Zintan militias allied with General Haftar and the Islamist militia alliance Fajr Libiya, supported by Qatar , were involved . The 40 days of fighting ended in a victory for the Zintan militia. They killed 142 people and injured 518. Both sides of the war committed grave human rights violations such as shooting, kidnapping and torturing innocent civilians.
