The Jebel Nafusa ( Arabic جبل نفوسة, DMG Ǧabal Nafūsa , Italian Gebel Nefusa , tamazight ⴰⴷⵔⴰⵔ ⵏ ⵉⵏⴼⵓⵙⵏ Adrar n Infusen ) is a coastal stratified mountain country in northwest Libya . The area is almost exclusively inhabited by Berbers .

The Nafusa Mountains are located in the hinterland of Tripolitania , one of the three historical great provinces of Libya . As an extension of the Dahar mountain range in Tunisia, it extends over 350 km from the Tunisian border at Nalut via Yafran , Gharyan and Tarhuna to al-Chums on the Mediterranean Sea and closes the Djeffara plain against the Sahara ( Hammada al-Hamra ) in the south . A steep step to the south leads to the sand, gravel and scree deserts of the Fessan .

Due to its height of up to 850 m (highest mountain 981 m), it enables rain to fall from clouds and agriculture in the Djeffara plain without complex irrigation systems.

history

Due to the favorable climatic conditions, grain and olives were already grown in ancient times . Agriculture experienced a great boom, especially under Roman rule, from the 1st century BC. The prosperity of the Roman upper class was also evident from a large number of villas that were built in the area of ​​Jabal Nafusa.

Especially since the Islamic conquest in the 7th century, the Jabal Nafusa was a retreat for the Berber tribes . So here reasonable Abul Khattab al-Maafiri in the 8th century Imamate of Ibadites and captured Kairouan in Ifriqiya . Even today groups of Ibadites live in Jabal Nafusa.

At the beginning of the civil war in 2011 , the tribes in the mountains rose up against the regime of Muammar al-Gaddafi and gained control over the area, namely over the cities of Nalut and Zintan , in eventful battles . From here, on August 20, 2011, the decisive advance to Tripoli took place , which resulted in the collapse of the Gaddafi regime.

Attractions

Apart from many scenic attractions, in the area of ​​the Nafusa Mountains are the storage castles ( ksour ) of Nalut , Kabaw , Qasr Bou Neran and Qasr el-Hadj .
