Az-Zintan ( Arabic الزنتان, DMG az-Zintān ; in German also Sintan) is a city in western Libya and was the largest city in Jabal Nafusa with around 40,000 inhabitants until the beginning of the civil war in 2011 . It is located in the northwest of the country about 160 kilometers southwest of Tripoli in the municipality of al-Jabal al-Gharbi .

history

In the course of the civil war in Libya in 2011 , heavy fighting broke out in March 2011 in connection with an offensive by forces loyal to Gaddafi in az-Zintan. The city has since been held by the insurgents. In May 2011, several attacks by Gaddafi troops with multiple missile launchers of the “ Grad ” type took place, which resulted in the escape of most of the civilian population. According to Human Rights Watch , more than 30,000 residents had left the city for Tunisia since the fighting began . A team of doctors from Doctors Without Borders , which had been working in the city since March, was evacuated at the end of May due to the ongoing shelling.

Since his arrest on October 20, 2011, Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam has been under the control of the local revolutionary brigade . His trial also began in Zintan in spring 2013.
