Gharyan ( Arabic غريان, DMG Ġaryān ) is a city in northwest Libya and the capital of the al-Jabal al-Gharbi municipality .

location

It is one of the largest cities in Jabal Nafusa at an altitude of 639 m and is about 90 km south of Tripoli .

population

Around 150,000 people live in the city. Berbers make up the majority of the population .

history

The city was once on important trade routes through Libya. In 1884 Gharyan was expanded by the Ottomans and received its own administrative structure. In the 1920s, under Italian occupation, a railway line was built between Tripoli and a village near Gharyan, which was destroyed by British troops during World War II . The city was also one of the centers of resistance to the Italian occupation.

Gharyan formed its own municipality with the surrounding area until the area was absorbed in 2007 in the newly formed municipality al-Jabal al-Gharbi .

In the civil war in Libya since 2014 , LNA militias of the warlord Khalifa Haftar built an advanced base in Gharyan for their April offensive against Tripoli in 2019. GNA militias of the Government of the National Accord finally announced that they had conquered the city on June 27, 2019.
