Yafran ( Arabic يفرن, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵢⵉⴼⵔⵏ Yifren ) is a city in the municipality of al-Jabal al-Gharbi in northwest Libya . It is located around 100 kilometers southwest of Tripoli and has a population of 18,460 (as of 2012). Until 2007, Yafran was the capital of the then dissolved Yafran municipality .
During the civil war in Libya in 2011, rebel-held Yafran and neighboring Al Galaa have been besieged by forces loyal to Gaddafi since April. Almost the entire civilian population of the two places has fled.
