Ranma ½ ( Japanese ら ん ま ½, Ranma ni-bun no ichi ) is a completed, internationally successful manga series by the Japanese illustrator Rumiko Takahashi , which was also implemented as an anime .
action
The series focuses on 16-year-old Ranma Saotome, a talented martial artist. His father, Genma Saotome, engaged him as a toddler to one of the three daughters of his friend Sōun Tendō in order to secure the continuation of the "everything-is-possible-fighting school for all kinds of fights". The action starts with the arrival at the tendos and the announcement of the deal. The choice finally falls on the youngest daughter, Akane Tendō. From then on, the Saotomes also live with the Tendōs, on whose property the said combat school is also located. While at the beginning the relationship between the two is extremely tense and both reject the engagement, in the course of the plot they realize that they secretly feel something for each other. The situation is made more difficult by the fact that Ranma, his father and other characters fell into haunted springs and have been under a curse ever since, which changes them into a different shape when they come into contact with cold water. Ranma transforms into a girl (hence the name affix “1-of-2”) and his father into a panda bear , and the effect can only be reversed with hot water.
In the course of the plot, more and more characters appear who have a relationship with Ranma or Akane or want to develop, which means that the two are constantly involved in fights.
Genre and style
Ranma ½ is characterized by bizarre characters, a multitude of comical scenes that arise when Ranma transforms into a girl in inappropriate moments, rapid changes from tragic, quiet and comical moments and by playing with expectations and "classic" gender roles. So is z. B. Ranma is typically macho, but scenes in which he emphasizes his masculinity are often ridiculed, e.g. B. when it comes into contact with cold water. As a girl, he then either retains his macho behavior or displays completely overdone girlish behavior to camouflage his alter ego .
Typical persons of respect are often exposed to ridicule, for example as a tearful father, child-like teacher or martial arts master who collects women's underwear.
Martial arts are an essential element in Ranma ½ and are also extensively parodied. There are weird martial arts and competitions in the show like martial arts figure skating, gymnastics, and cheerleading.
Ranma ½ also contains many puns in the Japanese original , which can hardly be translated and are therefore mostly missing in the German version. A few were used in the German translation and partly changed, one example is Ranma's "fetching chestnuts out of the fire" technique, this phrase was used for the first time in a fable by Jean de La Fontaine .
Characters
Saotome family
Ranma Saotome ( 早 乙 女 乱馬 , Saotome Ranma , as a girl in Hiragana ら ん ま )
- When Ranma wanted to develop his martial arts with his father Genma in the province of Qinghai in China on the famous training ground Jusenkyo ( 呪 泉 郷 , jusenkyō ), he was put into a source called "Nyanniichuan" (
娘 溺 泉 ) from which he reappeared as a girl. Now when he comes into contact with cold water he turns into a girl, but when he is doused with hot water he turns back into a boy again. In contrast to his father, who seems to be very comfortable as a taciturn panda, Ranma has enormous difficulties accepting his curse and is constantly looking for a cure. In some situations, however, he is not afraid to take advantage of his curse. The 16 year old boy lives almost exclusively for his martial arts and is extremely talented; he is probably one of the strongest martial artists ever. He also has a huge, but easily vulnerable, ego that often gets him into trouble. - Furthermore, Ranma has a large number of fiancés, which his father arranged for various reasons. Ranma appears very arrogant and callous. This can be attributed to its immaturity. But he also sacrifices important things for his friends, such as the cure for his curse. He has also suffered from ailurophobia (the fear of cats) since he was ten years old , which can be traced back to dangerous training with his father. After all, if he's in a room with a cat for too long, he'll end up behaving like a cat himself.
Genma Saotome ( 早 乙 女 玄 馬 , Saotome Genma )
- Genma is the callous, selfish, and greedy father of Ranma. He, too, was cursed in Jusenkyo, but turns into a panda when exposed to cold water. In contrast to Ranma, he has no problem accepting his curse, because it offers him many opportunities to escape from uncomfortable situations. While he keeps explaining to his son how important a sense of duty and honor are to a martial artist, he himself seems to be a rather bad example.
- Genma is selfish, greedy (which explains Ranma's numerous engagements), and downright cowardly. On the other hand, he is also a powerful martial artist who invented the techniques Umisen-ken and Yamasen-ken.
- When he transforms into a panda, he communicates with signs labeled with Kanjis .
Nodoka Saotome ( 早 乙 女 の ど か , Saotome Nodoka )
- Nodoka Saotome is the mother of Ranma Saotome. However, she has not seen her son or husband in over ten years. Explaining that a loving mother would interfere with Ranma's training, Genma went on a long training trip with his son. Before leaving, however, Genma signed a contract that he would raise Ranma to be a real man and that if he failed, the two would commit ritual suicide. However, Ranma's transformation into a girl through cold water did not make him a real man and since he and his father are too cowardly to tell Nodoka the truth, they pose as pet (panda) and cousin of the Tendos when they visit. Akane tries several times to convince Ranma to reveal himself to his mother, but this is sabotaged not only by Ranma's ego and his fear of the seppuku , but also by Genma's cowardice.
Tendo family
Akane Tendo ( 天道 あ か ね , Tendō Akane )
- Akane Tendo is the youngest daughter of Soun Tendo. She is 16 years old, very insecure with boys, has a good temperament and a very big heart. The engagement to Ranma, which had been arranged by the two fathers, went extremely badly at the beginning: the first time she saw him as a girl, the second time as a naked boy in her bathroom, who insulted her on top of everything else. But in the course of the story, the relationship between the two main characters deepens and there is a lot of evidence that the two fall in love, right up to the last manga in which Ranma even confesses his love to an unconscious Akane in his mind.
- Akane often feels "worse" than Ranma's other fiancée - also through insults from Ranma - because she is not so beautiful, cannot cook so well and is not so strong. Sometimes Ranma insults Akane just because he is jealous or he does it unintentionally, usually he only notices this later and even when apologizing he insults her again.
- Nevertheless, she is always there for him, helps him and even risks her life for him, just as he does for her. As for her sportiness, she is very talented, with the big exception of 'swimming'. In the manga, she is taught it later by Mousse. She is independent, strong and sometimes stubborn but has a kind hearted character.
Soun Tendo ( 天道 早 雲 , Tendō Sōun )
- Soun Tendo is an old friend of Genma Saotome and years ago agreed to have one of his daughters engaged to Genma's son. He is a widower and appears to be very loyal to his late wife. He has a large house and a training hall, but students are not shown in either the manga or the anime. He also wants to protect his daughters under all circumstances, but makes repeated attempts to marry Ranma and Akane if they get a little closer.
- Soun is as cowardly as Genma (especially near Happosai) and easily bursts into tears. He also often gets very angry about Ranma's behavior or when one of Ranma's other fiancés shows up.
Nabiki Tendo ( 天道 な び き , Tendō Nabiki )
- Nabiki is the second oldest daughter of Soun Tendo. She is 17 years old, has a very attractive appearance and is greedy for money. She has a sarcastic , selfish, and immoral disposition that is in stark contrast to her older sister, Kasumi. She was also engaged to Ranma for a short time when Akane broke off the engagement. But when she realizes that Akane doesn't seem to be happy anymore, she brings the two back together.
Kasumi Tendo ( 天道 か す み , Tendō Kasumi )
- Kasumi is the oldest woman in the Tendo family. She is 19 years old and has been looking after the household since her mother died. Unlike Nabiki, she is innocent, helpful, hardworking, loving, and doesn't seem to be affected by the madness that surrounds her. Also, she occasionally seems to be smarter than her age would suggest and always has good advice for anyone in need. She seems to have a certain affection for the family doctor Dr. To feel tofu.
The Chinese characters
Shampoo ( シ ャ ン プ ー , Shampū , Chinese 珊 璞 , Pinyin Shānpú )
- Shampoo originally came to Japan to kill Ranma after he defeated her in his female form at an annual tournament in her home village. It comes from the Amazon tribe from China. She had given him the kiss of death, a promise that she would pursue him to the end of the world and eventually kill him. But first she is defeated by the male Ranma and has to marry him according to tradition. When she finds out that the Ranma boy and the Ranma girl are the same person, she travels back to China in tears. As a punishment, she has to train with her grandmother Cologne at the cursed springs and falls into the cat's spring, which is very impractical for her because of Ranma's fear of cats.
- Back in Japan, she works as a beautiful waitress in her great-grandmother's restaurant, where she attracts a large number of customers because of her looks.
Cologne ( コ ロ ン , Koron , Chinese 可 崘 , Pinyin Kě Lún )
- Cologne is one of the elders of its Amazon tribe in China. She is 300 years old and was born during the Qing Dynasty . She originally came to Japan to see what her future son-in-law was made of, but in the end she stayed in Nerima and opened a café, the "Cat Café", which also works with shampoo to help Ranma's heart to win for yourself. She regularly incites Ranma, especially since he simply cannot defeat her. She also sets him several difficult tasks to force him to finally marry Shampoo. Although she is an extremely old woman, she should not be underestimated because she is arguably the strongest and most dangerous martial artist. She taught Ranma the attacks “Kachū Tenshin Amaguriken” (pulling chestnuts out of the fire) and “Hiryū Shōten Ha” (technique of the sky dragon).
- Unlike most of the others in Nerima, she seems to prefer to act in the background and watch everything. It only emerges when a clear motif can be recognized.
Mousse ( ム ー ス , Mūsu , Chinese 沐 絲 , Pinyin Mùsī )
- Mousse is an old friend of shampoo, although she sees it differently. He's been in love with shampoo all his life, but at best she notices him. He has very poor eyesight without his glasses and comes to Japan to look for shampoo and defeat fiancé. But with Ranma he has an opponent whom he can never defeat.
- He too has a jusenkyo curse that turns him into a duck. Mousse is also extremely persistent and stays in Nerima, where he works as a waitress with shampoo.
Jusenkyo guide
- The chubby leader of the haunted springs speaks very broken Japanese. Not only does he have an in-depth knowledge of every single source, he is also concerned about the well-being of the people and warns anyone who goes there of the dangers of the accursed training ground. His name is not mentioned in any episode. Every time a traveler falls into one of the springs, the Jusenkyo guide mentions the sad legend associated with that spring.
Kuno family
Tatewaki Kuno ( 九 能 帯 刀 , Kunō Tatewaki )
- Tatewaki is a high school student at the Furikan School and was one of the most famous and strongest students there - until Ranma came. Since he comes from a wealthy family, he is also chairman of the kendo clubs. He also likes to quote Shakespeare and is in love with Akane and Ranma's feminine side and never realizes that the male Ranma and the female Ranma are one and the same person. He is conceited, considers himself to be incredibly ingenious and flawless, but has no success with women or in duels with Ranma.
Kodachi Kuno ( 九 能 小 太 刀 , Kunō Kodachi )
- Kodachi is Tatewaki's younger sister and attends an all-girls school. She is the self-proclaimed "rising star of rhythmic martial arts", but is defeated by Ranma's female side in a fight and therefore hates them. She also believes the female Ranma is in love with the male Ranma, with whom she has been in love since he saved her from falling off the roof. Throughout the entire series, she tries to win Ranma's love with various aids such as paralyzing gas in roses or sleeping pills in biscuits. She also tries constantly to take out Akane and use tricks to persuade Ranma to have a wedding out of pity.
Director Kuno ( 九 能 校長 , Kunō-kōchō )
- Kuno, the father of Tatewaki and Kodachi, is the headmaster of the school, who taught in Hawaii for a long time . He has a very sick personality, as there is nothing he likes more than making life difficult for his students all the time. He tries by all means to teach the students discipline, especially Ranma, whose braid he cannot stand at all. He also speaks very poor English.
Sasuke Sarugakure ( 猿 隠 佐 助 , Sarugakure Sasuke )
- Sasuke is a stocky ninja with a speech impediment and has been working in the Kuno family's household since he was a child. Despite his good offices and his loyalty to his masters, Tatewaki and Kodachi often tell him nothing more than humiliation and neglect and is forced to do various types of dirty work, which he always does with zeal.

Dr. Tofu Ono ( 小 乃 東風 , Ono Tōfū )
- Dr. Tofu is the local chiropractor and very kind. As a result, he is welcomed by all residents of the suburb of Tokyo. He is also a martial artist and extremely competent when it comes to treating his patients, including Ranma and Akane. He is also head over heels in love with Kasumi, but she never even gives him the reason to believe that she loves him too. When Kasumi is in the doctor's office, the doctor becomes an incompetent clumsy man. At first Akane was in love with him.
Hinako Ninomiya ( 二 ノ 宮 ひ な 子 , Ninomiya Hinako )
- Hinako is a very special teacher who has been employed by Director Kuno. Her job is to teach the naughty students discipline. Hikaru Gosunkugi ( 五寸 釘 光 , Gosunkugi Hikaru )
- Hikaru Gosunkugi is an inconspicuous student at Furinkan High School. Secretly in love with Akane, he uses the strangest means to get rid of Ranma (whom he sees as a competitor), from magical paper dolls to voodoo spells, all of which are ineffective.
- Gosunkugi appears much less often in the anime than in the manga. In the anime series, he is largely replaced by Sasuke Sarugakure .

Ryoga Hibiki ( 響 良 牙 , Hibiki Ryōga )
- Ryoga has been a rival to Ranma since childhood and is famous for having an exceptionally poor sense of direction. After he himself was three days late for a duel with Ranma (he could not find the meadow behind his house where the fight was supposed to take place) he looked for him for months and finally found him in China, where he was from Ranma's feminine side a source is pushed while chasing her father. Manga
Ranma ½ appeared in Japan from September 1987 to February 1996 in a total of 407 single chapters in the Shōnen Sunday manga magazine of the Shōgakukan publishing house. These individual chapters were also summarized as a Tankōbon edition to 38 anthologies with 8-10 chapters each. The series enjoyed great popularity in Japan, with volume five already selling more than a million copies within one month in 1988. Due to the great demand there was a new edition ( Shinsōban ) of all manga volumes from April 2002 to October 2003 , and from December 2009 to May 2011 a “My First BIG Special” edition with 28 anthologies was published in Japan.
The manga series became an international success and has appeared in the USA , France , Spain , Italy , Argentina and Brazil , among others .
Ranma ½ by Egmont Manga and Anime (EMA) has been published in German. There were initially two unsuccessful attempts: in 1996 a publication in individual chapters in the first version of the Manga magazine Manga Power failed due to the discontinuation of the magazine, and a publication in 1997 based on the model of US comic albums (mirrored to the "western" reading direction, enlarged and with fewer pages) disappeared from the market after the fourth volume. In the third attempt, the complete series was finally published from May 1999 to February 2003 in the original volume distribution, but in a mirrored reading direction and as a translation first from the American and later from the French.
Anime
The Ranma ½ anime is almost completely based on the manga. Only towards the end does the story of the anime episodes differ from that of the manga.
Television series
Ranma ½ was produced as a television series by Kitty Film , with animation by Studio Deen . A total of 161 episodes were implemented and broadcast from April 15, 1989 on the Japanese television channel Fuji TV . Since the manga was very successful, the series was initially set to a main program slot at 7:30 p.m.
At the beginning of August 1989 the already announced episode P-chan is kidnapped ( さ ら わ れ た P ち ゃ ん! Sarawareta P-chan! ) Was not broadcast. The reason given was that several kidnappings were taking place in Japan at the time and viewers should not be reminded of them. Instead, after a short break, the series was released on August 19, 1989 with the episode A Bride for Dr. Tofu ( 骨 盤 占 い! ら ん ま は 日本 一 の お 嫁 さ ん Kotsuban Uranai! After the 18th episode on September 16, 1989, the television series was canceled for a short time, and continued from October 20, 1989 on a program slot two hours earlier. This second season Ranma ½ Nettōhen ( ら ん ま ½ 熱 闘 編 , ranma ni-bun no ichi nettōhen , Eng . "Ranma ½: hotter-fight chapter") ran with 143 episodes until September 25, 1992. Due to financial problems at Kitty Film that led to the discontinuation of production, the TV series only includes the plot up to chapter 227, the story arc with the appearance of Ranma's mother.
The television series was also broadcast in France , Italy , Spain and South Korea , among others .
At the beginning of 2013, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Shogakukan and the 35th work anniversary of Rumiko Takahashi, it was announced that the TV series in 3 boxes will be re-released on Blu-ray in Japan. The first box with 9 Blu-rays appeared on June 6, 2013.
Season one episode order
The non-broadcast three episodes of the first season were shown in the second season from December 8, 1989 to December 22, 1989. The TV airing of the first season caused a break in the plot as a result of this postponement when Akane recalled a scene from the unaired episodes on Shampoo's first appearance in episode 15.

For the Blu-ray release, the three episodes originally intended for the first season, but only shown in the second season, were moved to the originally planned location.
German implementation
The German start of episodes 1–80 took place on April 11, 2002 at 2:45 p.m. on RTL II . Just one day after the start of the series, RTL II announced that the series would be shown an hour later. From April 26, 2002, the time slot was moved to 4:40 p.m. After the broadcast of the episode The Victory of the Loser ( 対 決 ム ー ス! 負 け る が 勝 ち Taiketsu Mūsu! Makeru ga Kachi , dt. "Showdown, Mousse! Losing is winning"), RTL II repeated the first 17 episodes before the series began on 25. June 2002 at 6:30 p.m. with the episode Here comes Happosai! ( 究 極 の エ ロ 妖怪 八宝 斉 Kyūkyoku no Ero Yōkai Happōsai , dt. "The ultimate perverse Yōkai Happōsai") continued. After the episode The faithful Sasuke ( 九 能 家 の レ · ミ ゼ ラ ブ ル Kunōke no Re Miseraburu , dt. "Les misérables" of the Kunos ") on July 19, 2002, RTL II interrupted the broadcast and put it on August 26 at 4pm: 40 o'clock with the episode Demon Kuno ( 怪 談! 乱馬 と 魔 性 の 剣 Kaidan! Ranma to Mashō no Ken , German "A ghost story! Ranma and the cursed sword"). There is no German version of the remaining 81 episodes.
The German version of the first 80 episodes was released by Anime Virtual as three DVD boxes, without the original Japanese version. A DVD release of the remaining 81 episodes is not planned.

New Japan Studios produced the Japanese dubbing. The German dubbing was done by the Munich dubbing studio PPA Film GmbH. Dialogue directed by Michael Laske to the dialogue books by Laske and Stefan Sidak . The pronunciation of some character names is slightly falsified in the German dubbing. Shampū is pronounced in the German version as “Zampo” , Tōfū as “Toufel” and Ryōga as “Dioga” .

All film titles are parodies of well-known international films: Big Trouble in Little China (USA), Farewell, My Concubine (China) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (USA).
The first two films have now also appeared in German on DVD; the American film titles have been adopted. Ranma ½ - Big Trouble in Nekonron, China ran with Urusei Yatsura: Itsudatte My Darling in Japanese cinemas. Ranma ½: Chō Musabetsu Kessen! Ranma Team vs Densetsu no Houō is also known internationally as the ninth OVA episode because of its length . However, this episode actually ran as a double feature with the anime film by Ghost Sweeper Mikami and Heisei Inu Monogatari Bau ( 平 成 イ ヌ 物語 バ ウ ) in Japanese cinemas. The short film was later released as OVA together with the rest of the OVAs on DVD and provided with an opening and closing title, which was sung by the DoCo, whereby the image format of the opening and closing title was 4: 3, while the short film itself was 16 : 9 format uses.
OVAs
Based on the manga volumes 22-23, 25-27, 29 and 31, Studio DEEN produced a total of eleven OVA episodes that hit stores in Japan from 1993 to 1996. These episodes were not dubbed in German.

After a 15-year hiatus , a new short film by Ranma ½ called Ranma ½: Akumu! Was released on July 30, 2008 at the It's a Rumic World exhibition in Ginza , Tokyo . Shunminkō ( ら ん ま ½ 悪 夢！ 春 眠 香 , Eng . "Ranma ½: Nightmare! Springtime Sleep Incense ") and an Inu Yasha short film presented. Both short films were released on January 29, 2010 on the “It's a Rumic World” DVD box , together with a newly produced short film by Urusei Yatsura , which was shown at the same exhibition in December 2008. The short film has been available individually on DVD and Blu-ray since October 20th.

Soundtracks
Among the various anime versions of many in Japan appeared Soundtrack - CDs . The voice actors of the main female characters founded the band DoCo especially for this purpose , most of the Ranma songs are from them.
Video games
At Ranma ½, numerous video games came onto the market for Game Boy , SNES , Sega Mega Drive , PlayStation , PC Engine and PC-98 . Some of them have also appeared in the USA.
Pachinko machine
Sankyo released the first pachinko machine for Ranma ½ in February 2011 . Among other things, the last manga chapter was animated for this, which can be officially viewed on the website free of charge.
Live action
On December 9, 2011, a two-hour live-action special by Ranma ½ was shown on NTV. The theme song Chikutaku 2NITE ( チ ク タ ク ☆ 2NITE ) was sung by the music group 9nine .

reception
The trade magazine Funime praises Ranma's more versatile characters, who are "not quite so limited" compared to the previous series Urusei Yatsura .
The graphics and animations are not groundbreaking, but they are okay and the music fulfills its purpose despite its simplicity. The series is worth seeing for fans of the manga.
With the OVAs, "Drawings and animations [...] have of course increased a bit compared to the TV series, as has the soundtrack." With the OVA's action completed after one or two episodes, even newcomers would easily find their way into the action.
In the film Nihao My Concubine , "the drawings and animations are pretty neat and the soundtrack is okay." However, the plot is characterized as "relatively modest" and without any new approaches. Instead, they had more on the Fanservice concentrated and end up feeling stay "Was that all?" .
