Chūka Ichiban! ( jap. 中華 一番! ) is a manga series by Etsushi Ogawa , which appeared in Japan from 1995 to 1999. The Gourmet series was adapted as an anime series and later continued with a second manga and anime. Internationally, the series also became known as Cooking Master Boy .

The young chef Liu Mao Xing lives in a China similar to that of the 19th century, where great chefs compete with one another and have great influence and power. In order to be able to take over the restaurant of his mother, who is famous for her culinary art, he learns a wide variety of culinary arts, travels the country and wants to be equal to his mother's fame. He meets friends, but also rivals. He is often accompanied by Meili, daughter of the cook Chouyu and the impetuous boy Zhi Lao (Shirō). Again and again he meets Xi Er, a master of dim sum , who helps him but is also Mao's rival. Mao also meets Li Wen (Leon). Like other cooks Mao competes against, he is part of the cook's underworld. This secret society teaches secret recipes and techniques and wants to exercise power over the country and its people with their culinary art. Mao increasingly comes into conflict with the underworld and his friends are drawn into it too. With his skill and intuition he can win the cooking competitions against the representatives of the underworld. So against Li Wen, who then becomes a friend of Mao.

The manga was published from 1995 to 1999 in Shōnen Magazine by Kodansha . The publisher also brought out the chapters in 17 volumes. A Chinese translation was published by Tong Li Publishing .

Since November 2917, Pocket Magazine has published a sequel to the same mangaka under the title Chūka Ichiban! Kiwami .

Anime

At Nippon Animation , an adaptation of the manga as an anime series for Japanese television was created under the direction of Masami Anno . The character design comes from Tsuneo Ninomiya and Yoshiyuki Kishi, the artistic direction was Shigeru Morimoto . The responsible producers were Madoka Takiyama and Shunichi Kosao . the total of 52 episodes with a running time of 23 minutes each were broadcast from April 27, 1997 to September 13, 1998 by Fuji TV . Later translations into English, Spanish and Tagalog were made.

In 2019 a second anime series about Chūka Ichiban was created! , this time at Production IG . It was directed by Itsuro Kawasaki , who also wrote the script. The character design was created by Saki Hasegawa . The 25-minute episodes have been broadcast since October 11, 2019 by the broadcasters MBS , TBS and BS-TBS in Japan and published internationally by Crunchyroll via streaming, including German and English subtitles.
