The boondocks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Boondocks is a comic strip that appears daily in various US newspapers (including the Los Angeles Times , Washington Post and Chicago Tribune ) . The author and illustrator is the American Aaron McGruder .

Main themes are African-American cultures, capitalism and plutocracy , racism and American politics, observed through the eyes of the black teenager Huey Freeman.

Emergence

McGruder drew the first strips in 1997 for the student newspaper The Diamondback at the University of Maryland. Shortly thereafter, the strip was also printed in hip-hop magazine The Source . As a result of his growing popularity, he made his national breakthrough in 1999 when he signed a contract with the Universal Press Syndicate.

content

The strip shows scenes from the lives of the siblings Huey and Riley Freeman, who have just moved with their authoritarian grandfather from downtown Chicago to a “white” suburb of Woodcrest.

Huey (in one strip he states that his name refers to Huey Newton ) is a mostly very angry ten-year-old and has devoted himself entirely to radical criticism of political issues, he sympathizes with the ideas of the Black Panthers , and is critical of various aspects modern African-American culture, racism and the politics of George W. Bush . His brother Riley, on the other hand, is very taken with gangsta rap and tries to emulate a " bling-bling lifestyle".

Huey's best friend is Michael Caesar, who wants to become an MC , supports most of Huey's ideas but is less angry and more optimistic and humorous. The Freemans' neighbors are NAACP members Thomas Dubois (the name can be a reference to both WEB Du Bois and the character of Uncle Tom ) and his white wife Sara, both of whom are lawyers. Her daughter Jazmine is Huey's age and has feelings of insecurity about an ethnic identity . Huey therefore often accuses her of having lost touch with her origins.

Reception and meaning

The Boondocks is a deliberately political comic and so far has often been the subject of public controversy ; In particular, the behavior of the character Huey has been an occasion for several newspapers to interrupt or cancel the publication of the strip. However, the number of newspapers that publish The Boondocks has increased steadily since 1999. In some newspapers, the strip does not appear in the regular part, but in the Op-Ed editorial team.

The Boondocks is one of seven American comic strips drawn by African-American cartoonists , including Candorville , Curtis , Jump Start , Housebroken , Watch Your Head , Wee Pals and Herb and Jamaal . Other supraregional US comic strips that are similarly political are the "liberal" Doonesbury , Opus the Penguin , Rudy Park and La Cucaracha as well as the "conservative" Prickly City , State of the Union , BC and Mallard Fillmore .

The Boondocks can also be seen as a satire of America and world affairs and especially African Americans in America, which, although it makes you laugh, has a critical undertone. Furthermore, well-known personalities are parodied.

McGruder has sold the film and television rights to Sony Pictures Entertainment. The animated television series The Boondocks premiered on November 6, 2005 on the Cartoon Network's adult swim program . The first season was also released on DVD on July 25, 2006 . In Germany, all three seasons run on Animax . The fourth season was published on ProSieben Fun . The style of the series is inspired by anime and manga and was originally intended to be collaborated with the anime studio Madhouse .

On March 21, 2014, Cartoon Network announced that the series would be expanded to include a fourth and final season. In addition, the fourth season will be produced without Aaron McGruder collaboration. As a reason for the production of the fourth season without the participation of Aaron McGruder, differences in the run-up to production were named.

On June 12, 2019, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced the production of a remake of the series for 2020. On September 18, 2019, the video-on-demand provider HBO Max announced that 2 seasons with 12 episodes each have already been ordered and will be published exclusively there for the time being.

Like the comic book model, the series became one of the most controversial cartoons.
