Blade Runner Black Out 2022 is an American - Japanese anime - short film directed by Shin'ichirō Watanabe . It and the short films 2036: Nexus Dawn and 2048: Nowhere to Run serve as prequels for the feature film Blade Runner 2049 by director Denis Villeneuve . The film was initially released on September 27, 2017 via the Crunchyroll streaming service . The day after, Warner Bros. also released the film on YouTube . It's also on the Blade Runner 2049 Blu-ray release .

The action begins in May 2022 , three years after the events of Blade Runner . In Los Angeles , the mighty Tyrell Corporation has unveiled the new replicants of the Nexus -8 series, which, like humans, have a natural life expectancy . This creates resistance from the human population, who now see the replicants as a threat and kill them as soon as they get hold of them. When hunting the replicants, they use the Replicant Registration Database.
Trixie, one of the Nexus 8 replicants, is harassed by three thugs in a back street. The replicant Iggy rushes to her aid and kills the attackers. Iggy served as a soldier on the planet Calantha. After realizing that the enemy soldiers were replicants just like him, he deserted his unit.
Iggy asks Trixie for assistance in an operation of the underground movement of the replicants. Together they are supposed to destroy the database of the Tyrell Corporation in order to make the hunt for the replicants more difficult. Trixie makes friends with the technician Ren, who is jointly responsible for the supervision of nuclear missile tests. He agrees to detonate the weapon over Los Angeles during a missile test. The electromagnetic pulse is supposed to trigger a blackout in the greater Los Angeles area and erase all electronic data. In addition, Trixie and Iggy hijack a fully loaded tanker truck that they want to detonate in front of the Tyrell Corporation building in order to physically destroy the database server. Trixie is shot dead while fighting with the company's security forces. The operation succeeds anyway and Iggy manages to detonate the tanker. At the same time, the explosion of the atomic bomb paralyzes all electrical devices. Numerous spinners and other flying devices crash over the city.
The action leads to a ban on replicants and thus seals the fate of the Tyrell Corporation. It was not until more than ten years later that Wallace Corporation would obtain permission to produce a new type of replicant.
Iggy managed to escape from the crime scene. He removes his right eye, the only part of his body that could clearly identify him as a replicant.
